G. W. Barrere
THE NEWS-HERALD, Geo. W. Barrere, Prop., Postoffice Building.—This paper was formerly the News, dates its establishment to 1837. The Hillsboro Herald was started in 18--. The News came into the control of Mr. Barrere in 1884, and the following year the two papers were consolidated by the proprietor’s purchase of the Herald’s stock and good will. Mr. Barere, who is recognized as a caustic and able writer and journalist, is a native of this country, reared upon the farm, and has been a resident of this city since 1844. He applied himself to the art of dentistry and was engaged in that business, chiefly, from 1853 to 1861. The tocsin of war sounding, national disruption led him to abandon his profession and enter the Union army in 1861 as a member of company A, Sixtieth regiment, O V. I., and he was subsequently commissioned First Lieutenant, serving for one year. For a short time he retired to the home farm, but soon after received the appointment of Provost Marshal, with office located in this city. Upon the organization of the One Hundred and Sixty eighth regiment, O. V. I., Mr. Barrere was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel, in which position he served to the close of the war. For some years he was engaged in the general grocery and provision trade, for over ten years was deputy Postmaster under his father and from 1880 to 1884 filled the position of bookkeeper. The News-Herald is a six column quarto, and is devoted to local and general news. The interests of this city and county, and of the G.O.P., to who we are indebted for an undivided country and a Nation—one and indivisible. As a trenchant writer Col. Barrere holds a position of recognized prominence, and articles from the News-Herald are frequently copied in other parts of the State. The job department is thoroughly equipped with newest presses and material, with steam power, for the rapid and prompt execution of every description of book, commercial and job printing.
