Belmont County Courthouse, Main Street St. Clairsville, Ohio
Belmont County was one of the first counties settled in Ohio. Belmont County was established by Governor St. Clair
on September 7, 1801. This was 2 years before Ohio officially became a
state. Belmont County was the site of many
desperate Indian battles.
The County Seat is St. Clairsville which is situated on an elevated site, in rich
farming country, on the Old National Road (Now U.S. Route 40).
St. Clairsville was named for Gen. Arthur St. Clair, Governor of the Northwest Territory.
The name "Belmont" or "belle monte" means Beautiful Mountain.

Volunteers Needed
The Belmont County OHGenWeb is looking for volunteers to transcribe the census (must have access to the microfilm) or who can do cemetery readings for transcription. The USGenWeb has a goal to get all census years online and my goal is to make Belmont County an excellent source for researchers by having all census years online. If you can help with either of these projects please e-mail at Carol Montrose and let me know what you can do to help.
Belmont County has it's own mailing list.

About The USGenWeb Project
In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. In June, as the Kentucky Project was coming to completion, it was decided to expand the project to include all states. Volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of county pages for each state page. |
Many Thanks to the previous County Coordinator, Bernice Wilson, for creating a wonderful genealogy research tool for Belmont County Ohio.
