Methodist Episcopal Church of Beaver Dams
THE DIMON QUIILT
"In about 1895 the ladies of the Beaver Dams
Methodist Episcopal Church decided to build a church parlor and dining
area. This quilt was one of the projects undertaken to raise money
for it. Each person whose name appears on either a hub or spoke of
the wheel design paid a certain fee to have his or her name there on.
When the quilt was completed [in about 1897-98]
a Harvest Supper was held in a small hall over the railroad depot [&
over the Dilmore workshop], and the quilt was sold at auction. The
highest bidder was Jerome DIMON, proprietor of the "DIMON House" the only
hotel in town.
Years passed and the hostelry was sold, and the
DIMON family scattered. Benjamin Franklin DIMON, the only son, was
the last to leave, taking with him his "talisman" - this quilt - which
had been handed down through his family. He never divulged his business
except that he yearly crossed the Atlantic Ocean and circled the Mediterranean
Sea. After making a call at Washington D.C., he made a short visit
to friends in the Beaver Dams area, then on to California, this quilt always
with him. [Note: this could be "Bill" DIMON of California
who traveled abroad frequently & was involved in the circus business.]

When old age overtook him and his health began
to fail, he made his final trip to his birthplace and left this quilt with
Bertha SEAMAN BERRY. Bertha in turn left it with Allie ROLOSON MOORE
so it could be said that 'He had brought it back to Beaver Dams as it always
had him.'
In 1978 this quilt was presented to the Beaver
Dams Old Home Day Association by Allie MOORE, to be placed with other memorabilia
of days gone by in Beaver Dams. It was decided by members of the
Association to encase this memento under glass to be displayed in the church
parlor for all interested persons to study and enjoy."

Family members or relatives were sometimes grouped together on a wheel, so the names are grouped here as they appeared in each wheel design. The wheels are numbered, but not in any particular order. One of the oldest people respresented on the quilt was born in 1805.

- Jerome's first wife was Emily (not on Quilt), their son was George
(G.H. Dimon on quilt, died young?).
- Jerome's second marriage to Derinda M (D.M. Dimon & Mrs. Dimon
on quilt), their son was
Benjamin Franklin Dimon (not on quilt), daughters were Charlotte
S.,& Ida A and
second son William B (Willie of quilt), he apparently died young.
- Ida had a daughter Leora S Dimon (L. Dimon on the quilt) before
she married Frank Stowell.

Thus far, Benjamin Franklin Dimon can not be found on any census.
This branch of the Dimon family is called, by some, the Tompkins
county branch (the first place they
settled after leaving Long Island). It spread through Upstate
NY & northern PA before dispersing to
OH, IL, IA, KS, MT, CA, etc.
