Journal #4 - Farmer's Day Book, 1844 - 1860

NOTE: the handwriting was sometimes difficult to decipher so there may be errors.

1852 is the first date on the inside of the first cover, though earlier dates
occur on later pages.  This 6x8 book has the heading writen on the second page,

Inside Cover Jottings:
Below are the names & any pertinent info.
Horses are the main subject mentioned, as they were taken back & forth to local farms.
Also mentioned is straw, wheat, thrashing [=threshing] of many grains; boots & shoes for various people;
the lending of money; the sowing of grains; taking grains to the grist mill.
There was trading of seed for wheat.
Many dates are out of consecutive order but were recorded on consecutive pages.

Took my brown mare up to the Stephen CLEVELAND's.
His horse Morgan, chestnut sorrel four of -- ?, went past one weeks difference
   with the the sorral folded 15th of May.
Sorrel bobtail mare took the ?  June 7th
The old gray mare, the same horse around by Mr. OUTERKIRK, Benton Center.

May 1st, 1854 Andrew AYERS commenced to live in my house May 1st, 1854.
   Six shillings for work cr. (credit) for work by cash to apply on rent $10.00.

   listed under this account is a large list of work done on shoeing horses, fixing plows,
   sharpening Bay teeth, etc.
Aug 12, 1850 Credit money to account paid Minister for shed.
Paid school bill $1.50
May 15, 1850 starts Memorandum of the credits of the farm.
Note for Hilfer
sold two calfs
one pair of horses sold cash $160.00.
Many things were sold for cash. Oats, wheat, sows, sheep, pigs, hides, ears of corn by the bushel.

In  the back of the book on the last page is a recipe that goes as follows.
A salf (safe) and (sure) shure care for Heayer? or wind broken horses.
Take 2 1/2  lbs. dryed and pulverised ( pulverized) wild turnip
 2 1/2 lbs. of grown ginger
2 1/2 oz salt peter and mix all together  and give a horse a table spoonfull (spoonful) twice
per day in their feed and you will have a Raofeal ? and safe and shure cure.

Recept (recipe) for stifle on a horse
2 oz camphire (camphor) gum
2 oz of oil spike
1/2 oz asaphetaday ? cut it with Aleahall (alcohol?)
