tp Solar Salt Vats, Syracuse, NY, postcard from Michelle Stone
Postcard postmarked 1909, shows what some of the solar salt works along the southeast edge of Onondaga Lake looked like at the turn of the
century. The "flats" were filled with salty water from the lake's salt springs, and the sun eventually evaporated the water. Wooden covers
could be pulled down over the flats in bad weather or at night. The last solar salt works went out of business in 1926.
