CIVIL WAR SERVICEMEN, TOWN OF MANLIUS

CIVIL WAR SERVICEMEN, TOWN OF MANLIUS

Compiled by Kathy Crowell, Manlius Historical Society, 1997

PART I -- A through I

The following service records come from a variety of sources. Information not in parentheses is drawn from The Record of Civil War Officers and Soldiers of the Town of Manlius. This roster was completed on February 23, 1866 by L. C. Gardner, Town Clerk. Additional, or conflicting, information is in parentheses, and comes from other sources.

Although Maj. Andrew W. Wilkin initially enrolled as a Private in Co. H, 122nd Regt. at Camillus, for eight years he published the Weekly Recorder newspaper in the town of Manlius. From 1888-1891 he published a Veteran's Column that contained a significant local Civil War history. For this reason, he is mentioned here. He was born in Otisco, N.Y. on July 3, 1843, died in 1918, and is buried in the Fayetteville Village Cemetery.

Although no servicemen from the town of Manlius received the medal of honor in the Civil War, twelve men were awarded Brevet commissions for gallant and meritorious service: Millard A. Baker, George Bolster, Henry N. Burhans, Ruel P. Buzzell, Joseph E. Cameron, Addison Cole, Jr., Hervey E. Eaton, Oscar A. Hughes, Lester C. Mitchell, Levi A. Morse, John J. Morse and William H. Nims.

THE TOWN OF MANLIUS CIVIL WAR MONUMENT

In 1868 the sum of $2,500 was appropriated at the town meeting for the erection of a monument to the memory of soldiers who served in the Union cause from the town of Manlius. The contract was given to Josephus Cross and the monument placed in the Fayetteville Village Cemetery on a lot donated by the Cemetery Association.

The 25 ft. tall monument is of granite and weighs 24 tons. The base weighs six tons and the die on which the names are inscribed weighs seven tons. The monument was dedicated on July 5, 1869 following thirteen guns at sunrise.

A procession formed at 10:00 on Mill St. in front of Beard Hotel in Fayetteville in the following order: Manlius band, returned soldiers, members of families of deceased soldiers, invalid soldiers in carriages, officers of the day; orator, reader and chaplains; monumental commissioners, cemetery trustees and invited guests; fire companies; citizens and strangers. Upon arrival at the cemetery, America and the Star Spangled Banner were sung, prayers and the Declaration of Independence, statistics and a dedicatory ode written by B. Griffin were read, followed by the dedication, doxology and benediction.

The procession then marched down Manlius St. to Clinton, to Warren, to Genesee, then to Beard Hotel where dinner was served by landlord J. S. Loveland. At the table a blessing was pronounced and after dinner, 13 regular toasts were made followed by fireworks. (Articles in an 1868 Weekly Recorder" in Julia Gage's Civil War scrapbook and the July 1, 1869 Weekly Recorder.

At the top of the monument is the following inscription:

TO OUR HONORED DEAD BY THE TOWN OF MANLIUS

The 54th remains the most famous black regiment of the war, due largely to the movie "Glory," which recounts the story of the regiment prior to and including the attack on Battery Wagner, July 18-September 7, 1863. The regiment was mustered out at Mount Pleasant, SC August 20, 1865 and discharged at Boston, MA on Sept. 1, 1865.
