Shoemaker Family Cemetery

SHOEMAKER BURYING GROUND

Minoa

Town of Manlius

Submitted by Nancy Schiffhauer, Sue Goodfellow, Maggie Davison and Kathy Crowell, April 30, 1999.

This old abandoned family cemetery was until recently best described as a field of day lilies, blackberry bushes and locust trees.  On October 10, 1998, eighteen Boy Scouts and volunteers removed brush and fallen branches, and on April 18, 1999 twenty volunteers raked off additional debris as part of National Youth Service Day.

The following list appears in "Inscriptions from Cemeteries in Onondaga Co." taken from notes by William Martin Beauchamp in the early 1900s.  According to Rev. Beauchamp, a flat stone at the entrance of the cemetery (now buried or gone) contained the following names:  Rudolph Shoemaker, Margaret Shoemaker, Rudolph Shoemaker, Dolly Shoemaker, Lawrence Harter & wife.  According to The History of the Shoemaker Family, "In the old Shoemaker Cemetery in Minoa was the tombstone now destroyed but seen by Mrs. Florence Broadbooths:  Rudolph Shoemaker, Margaret Shoemaker, Rudolph Shoemaker, Jr., Lawrence Harter and wife."  Lawrence Harter died in 1832 and was buried in the Shoemaker Cemetery at Manlius Station (Northern N.Y. Families Genealogy, Vol. III, Revolutionary Soldiers of Onondaga Co.)
