Sutherland, James H., PO Darien, N. Y., son of Amaziah and Lucy (Hall) Sutherland, was born in the town of Pembroke (now Darien), Genesee County, N. Y., December 16, 1828. He had the advantages of a good education and at an early age was employed as a teacher in the public schools during the winter months and in the summer worked on his father's farm. In 1852 he engaged in mercantile business at Darien Center, where he conducted a general store until 1868. He then accepted a position with the Erie Railroad Company, in charge of the Griswold station, and faithfully discharged his duties there nineteen years. At the end of this service he engaged in farming, which he still follows. Mr. Sutherland has always taken an active interest in political affairs and held the office of justice of the peace for a number of years. He was supervisor of his town from 1881 to 1884. In politics he is a Democrat. On July 4, 1853, he married Emma, daughter of Lorine and Eunice (Jinks) Carter; they have one daughter, May, wife of Giles Ranger. Mr. Sutherland is a member of Attica Lodge No. 462, F. & A. M. |
