Two Young Men Drowned

It is our sad duty again this week to chronicle the death of two of Le Roy's young men by drowning. Between the hours of nine and ten o'clock
Saturday evening last, the cry rapidly circulated though our streets that a boat had overturned on the Oatka, near the residence of R. Ballard, Esq., and
its occupants, two young men, had gone to the bottom. It was not known who they positively were, as several parties had been boating during the evening, and the night was one of pitchy darkness, but it was surmised that they might be Frank Rogers, son of N. M. Rogers, and Austin R. Phelps, son of Israel B. Phelps, which surmises proved too true. Boats were procured and prompt efforts made to recover the bodies, the most active participants in which were Ned Luttrell, Wm. Clasby, John Wright and Charlie Lapp, all companions of the unfortunate young men, who plunged into the water and after about half an hour's steady search succeeded in their worthy object. The bodies were conveyed to the parlors of the Eagle Hotel, and a number of our medical fraternity being in attendance efforts were commenced for their resuscitation.

But, alas, all was futile - the vital spark had fled. After the physicians had ceased their labors and give up all hope of bringing back life, the body of Rogers was conveyed to the residence of his father. Here we witnessed the heartrending scene of a parent, yet unwilling to believed his manly boy dead,
striving to infuse life into the inanimate corpse. But even the fond parent, after hours of ceaseless endeavors, was fain to admit that life was extinct,
and bowed his head in sorrow to the Divine will. Frank had reached his nineteenth year, was highly respected for his manly qualities, and was the
pride of his mother's heart to whom he was ever an affectionate and kind son, whose slightest wish was his law - and what more need we say.

Austin R. Phelps was the only son, the pride of his father, his mother's joy, and sisters love. He was nearly sixteen years of age, and gave promise of a
bright future. He was spoken of by his associates as being generous to a fault and whose friendship was strong and lasting.

The funerals were largely attended by our citizens, thus manifesting to an eminent degree their deep and heartfelt sympathy for the bereaved families.
