BIOGRAPHY

JOSIAH MERRIMAN

Merriman, Josiah, was born in the State of Massachusetts, January 11, 1811, son of Robert and Lucina (Woodruff) Merriman. Like the majority of the youths of his day, his education was confined to that obtainable at the district schools. He was one of the pioneers of Byron, and through his long life has been a practical farmer, thorough and progressive in his methods, and a worthy example of the intelligent agricultural element of our population. He is now one of the largest landowners in Genesee County. Apart from the fact that Mr. Merriman has become nearly blind from advanced age, his faculties have been remarkably preserved. Of powerful and vigorous frame, he is a fine type of the prosperous farmer and worthy citizen. In 1837 Mr. Merriman married Mary Wheeler. Their family of children included Henry, Sheldon, Mrs. E. N. Moulthrop and Elmina S., who was born April 7, 1838, and died May 2, 1862.
