|
McElver, James, was born in the North of Ireland, May 1, 1824, and came to the United States with his mother, Mary Anderson McElver, who settled in St. Lawrence County. His father died in Ireland in 1824. Mr. McElver was educated in the common schools, learned the blacksmith's trade in Ogdensburgh, and in 1846 came to Genesee County, settling in Byron in 1848. In 1874 he purchased the Cummings foundry, and at the present time is making a specialty of manufacturing agricultural implements. In 1846 Mr. McElver married Maria Olmsted; their children are James, William, Burt, Edwin, Ellen McCard, Mrs. Cora Post and Mrs. Addie Farrington. Mr. McElver is one of the self-made men of Genesee County, has served as collector, and takes an active interest in local public affairs. He is a member of Byron Lodge of Odd Fellows, No. 655.
