BIOGRAPHY

DR. JOSEPH M. LEWIS - OF YORK COUNTY, CANADA AND ELBA, NY

Lewis, J. M., M. D., was born in York County, Canada, July 7, 1851, a son of Richard Lewis, a native of Wales. He was educated at the Collegiate Institute of Toronto, Canada, and studied medicine at Jefferson College of Philadelphia. He was graduated from the Medical University at Philadelphia in 1874, and from the University of Buffalo in 1880. He came to Elba in 1877. In 1874 Dr. Lewis married Elizabeth, daughter of Abraham Steckley; their children are Bertha, Mary G. and Joseph L. Dr. Lewis is a member of the Western New York Homoeopathic Association and of the Knights of the Maccabees.

Dr. Joseph M. Lewis was born in York County, Canada, July 7, 1851. His father died February 18, 1851. The family on both sides are of Welsh ancestry, his father being born in North Wales, County Montgomeryshire, and his mother in York County, Canada. Dr. Lewis was educated at Victoria Square, and at the age of 18 he attended the Collegiate Institute of Toronto, and studied medicine at Victoria in connection with his collegiate work. In 1873 he went to Jefferson College, and in 1874 was at Philadelphia University, from which he graduated. May 26, 1874, he married Elizabeth, youngest daughter of Abraham Steckley, of Bethseda, York County, Canada. They have three children, namely: Bertha L., Mary G., and Joseph Lister. Dr. Lewis first located at Clarence Center, Erie County, and came to Elba in 1877.
