Marcena B. Hewes, son of Ralph, was born in Oneida County, N. Y., March 7, 1822. He came to Genesee County when about 20 years old, locating in the town of Le Roy, where he resided till 1879, when he moved to Bergen. He has a fine, large farm of 290 acres, about four miles northwest of Bergen village, and also owns 30 acres in Riga. He married Cordelia Banister, October 10, 1848, and 10 of their 11 children are living. Dayton Hewes, the fourth son, was born in Le Roy, April 3, 1862, and by occupation is a farmer. He was educated for a teacher, and taught a few terms, but the farm duties predominated and he drifted to farming exclusively. October 27, 1886, he was married to Cora, daughter of George and Amelia Snyder, of Bergen. He and his brother Otis now work the farm of their father. Source:

Hewes,
Marcena Ballard. is one of the old and eminently respectable citizens
of Genesee County. He was born in the town of Lee, Oneida County,
N. Y., March 7, 1822. His grandfather Hewes was a soldier in the Revolutionary
war, was taken prisoner by the British and held a captive on board
an English man-of-war until the close of hostilities; he was a nephew
of Mr. Hewes one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Marcena Ballard Hewes grew to manhood in the town where he was born
at the home of his grandparents, his mother having died when he was
an infant, and his father marrying again In 1848 Mr. Hewes came to
the town of Le Roy, where an uncle of his lived. When he arrived he
had but fifty cents to his name, but he was full of energy and pluck
and went to work with vim; he purchased a tract of eighty-four acres
and added to this a few years later forty-five acres more. In 1879
he traded the forty-five acres as part payment for a 218 acre farm
in the town of Bergen, and after many years of hard and successful
toil on his farm is now taking the ease he has so justly earned by
retiring from active farm duties, leaving the farm in care of his
sons. In politics Mr. Hewes has always been a strong and consistent
Democrat and stands firm in the principles of bi-metalism. He has
been twice married; his first wife was Cordelia Banister of Le Roy,
whom he married on October 10, 1848; they had five sons and three
daughters; his wife died in June, 1868, and for his second wife he
married Mary Jane Stevens; they had two sons and one daughter.
