Thomas Jefferson Dean was the son of Ephraim Dean, and was born at Mansfield, Conn., July 7, 1800. In early days he learned the blacksmiths' trade, which he followed till two years before his death, which occurred August 5, 1848. May 4, 1824, he married Fanny F. Gurley, of Mansfield, Conn., and came to Genesee County in the spring of 1835, to Pine Hill in Elba. Here he lived most of the time until he died, leaving seven children, of whom only one is living -Thomas Jasper Dean, born October 29, 1836. The latter learned the shoe trade, which he followed for 10 years, when he engaged in farming and its kindred duties, which suited better his taste. He was in the civil war, enlisting as a private in Co. B, 129th N. Y. V., and was mustered, August 22, 1862, into the U. S. service. His regiment was transferred to the 8th N. Y. H. A., and Mr. Dean was in all the battles of that valiant regiment, serving until the close of the war. A shell-wound on his left shoulder was the only injury he received during the entire list of battles. He received a commission as second lieutenant July 1, 1864, dated June 3d. He was mustered out of service at the expiration of his term, June 22, 1865. On January 30, 1866, he married Celestia M., daughter of S H. and Sarah K. Reed, of Bergen. Three children were born to them, viz.: Minnie C, born January 6, 1868; Charles R., born January 25, 1870; and Calvin N., born June 15, 1874. He has filled the offices of justice of peace seven terms and justice of Sessions two. Source:
