BIOGRAPHY

OWEN CURTIS - OF DARIEN, NY

Owen Curtis, a pioneer settler, was born in Warren, Conn., in 1789. He came to Genesee County in 1808, and selected a farm in the wilderness of Batavia, now Darien, on which he lived over 70 years. In 1815 he married Abigail Wait, of Washington County, and reared eight children. Mrs. Curtis died in 1848. and a few years after he married Mrs. Abel, who survived him. Mr. Curtis died in 1879, in his 90th year. He was not a man of forms and ceremonies, but lived within himself and minded his own business, conceding the same rights to others that he claimed and stubbornly maintained for himself. He was a man for home and peace, and made no effort for show or popularity. He was proverbial for his integrity,, and was kind and neighborly. By fair dealing and prudence he accumulated a good property.
