Barnes, Joseph C., was born in County Cumberland, North of England, December 12, 1845, a son of William and Mary Barnes, and was educated partly in England and partly in Canada, to which country his parents came in 1857. He learned the tailor's trade and in 1865 came to Batavia where he was employed until 1873, when he established his present business and is carrying the leading stock of gents' furnishing goods and merchant tailoring goods in Batavia. Mr. Barnes is a worthy man, and has earned and maintained a place in the ranks of the representative business men of Batavia, and has served as a trustee of the village. In 1869 Mr. Barnes married Clara M., daughter of Nicholas Hawkins; they have two children: William Arthur and Eva J. Eva married Louis A. Woodward. His son is connected with his father's business.
