Monmouth County in 1793 Project
Did your ancestors live in Monmouth County in 1793? MCGS is mounting a project to identify and illuminate the families of the 2,592
Monmouth County men listed on the 1793 Militia Census of New Jersey.
The militia listings were created due to the reorganization of the State Militia of New Jersey in 1793. These records list almost
every free, white able-bodied male between the ages of 18 & 45 in the state at that time. This is very important because the 1790
census for the state of New Jersey was destroyed in the War of 1812. The militia lists are available in printed form -- "New Jersey
in 1793" compiled by James S. Norton. There are some 30,000 names listed by each county and township and is fully indexed.
We are looking to you to help us make this project a success! By including your ancestors, they will be documented for future
generations.
Submission requirements:
Please list Head of Family with all vitals known, Name of Wife with maiden name and all vitals known, and Names of Children with
all vitals known including spouses and vitals. All submissions must include source documentation.
