A brief history of Garfield County
Garfield County was named after James A. Garfield and
formed from Wheeler County in 1884.
In 1885 Willows Springs was the county seat. In 1890 Burwell
became the county seat. Garfield County is the home of Nebraska's
largest outdoor rodeo, and Calamus Dam.
The first newspaper was the Burwell Bell in 1885.
Burwell  remained a village until 1947, when it became a city.
