VICKSBURG GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

WELCOME TO THE VICKSBURG GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY'S HOMEPAGE!

VGS was formed in 1982. It was incorporated in 1986. To learn more about our policies please click here. The Society publishes a fully indexed quarterly journal called Mississippi River Routes.

If you are interested in a genealogical society that encompasses the Louisiana parishes and Mississippi counties along and near the Mississippi River from the northern boundary of Louisiana's Florida Parishes (Louisiana-Mississippi line) to the Louisiana-Arkansas line and beyond, the Vicksburg Genealogical Society (VGS) is for you. We hold monthly meetings between September and May and offer informative programs. Mississippi River Routes is included with your annual $25-per-household membership dues (Our membership year runs from June 1-May 31.).  Each issue of Mississippi River Routes features original documented material, including family history, record inventories, church, public, organizational, or corporate records, Bible records, cemetery inventories, letters, diaries, ledgers, and queries, to name a few. We are continually recruiting new members and seeking new material for Mississippi River Routes.

THE USGenWeb PROJECT

In March and April 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. At the same time, volunteers were recruited to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page.

This project soon grew into what is now the USGenWeb Project. There are now volunteers who handle the webpages at the state level and at the county level. These volunteers are working hard each day to provide the Genealogical community another way of communicating. Please contact your respective state or county coordinator if you would like to volunteer. The state coordinators for Louisiana and Mississippi are, respectively, Edward J. Hayden, Jr., and  Lori Thornton .
