William Malachi Stark Letter
William Malachi Stark sent the following letter to his sister Jane
Stark following the Battle of Atlanta:
In line of battle near Palmetto Station, Ga.
Sept. 25, 1864
Dear Sister Jany,
I seat my self to drop you a few lines to
inform you that I am well and doing well. We are now camped near
Palmetto & are intrenched but the yanks are all gone back to
Atlanta consequently all is quiet and peasible. It is reported
that all of our prisoners at Camp Chace has broken prison and got loose
and are making thar way south. I hope it is so. The next
nuse is that the first time for a long while that they could claim a
victory in Va. But they whipped Genl. Earlys Corpse & will
crow over that for a long time. It is reported that Genl. Forest
is here in charge of all the cavalry here and Genl. Wheelor is at
Corinth in forest place. If forest is here you all will miss him
for Genl Wheelor is not the Genl that Forest is. I hope when this
letter comes to hand it will find you all well. It has been bad
rainy weather for the last week but today in Sonday & has every
appearance of good weather for a while. I can but wish that I was
there with you all to enjoy myself & I hope before next year this
time we will all be home together & peace will spread its most
desired preasants over our land but I am afraid that it will not close
for some time yet. I have written several letters since I
received one from you all. I think it is time that I was getting
a letter from you all. I have written you two letters & in
both ones I stated for you to send me some clothes. I suppose you
al have got the letters. My mess[age]. Is all well that is
here. Only four of us, Gurny, Alexander, wicker &
myself. Mr. Elliott is off at the hospt sick & I am afraid he
is dead for we have not heard from him in a long while. Uncle
Jerry Braddock was wounded in the breast & is at the hospt.
We are drawing onlt tolerably plenty of rations. We do very well
with what little we forage. Robert was well the last I heard from
him. You must write to me every chance you have for I like to
hear from you all any time. I will close for this time. My
love to all the family. I remain your devoted
