Mississippians Buried at Bardstown Kentucky
During the Kentucky campaign, Bragg's army occupied Bardstown,
Ky. for about two weeks, using a local Catholic college as a hospital.
After Perryville, some of the wounded Federals as well as captured Confederates
from the battle were brought back to St. Joseph's. In all, a total of 67
Confederates died in Bardstown and were buried with wooden headstones in
the local cemetery. After the war, returning soldiers placed a fence around
the graves and eventually a monument was erected but the individual headstones
rotted away and the names were lost. In 1987 a gentleman is supposed to
have searched Compiled Service Records for all the regiments who were with
Bragg on that campaign and come up with 50 names. A family member of another
soldier who died there made it 51 and 16 unknowns. In 1998 the Ky. Division
of the SCV decided to order VA headstones for the men based on the list.
The stones were erected over three weekends and a fomal dedication ceremony
was held.
Notice the William P. Box of Co. H 34th Mississippi. There
is a W.P. Box who died 3 June 1911 in McKay Cemetery in Benton Co. If you
have information about this W.P. Box and know if he was the one in the
34th, please let me know. If this is the same man then he obviously did
not die at Bardstown and the marker for him needs to be replaced with an
unknown.
