Sedalia Democrat, August 5, 1930: John F. Schlusing, 86 years old, died at the home southwest of Lamonte at four AM Monday morning. He was born in Germany August 19, 1843. He was a Union Soldier in the Civil War. Mrs. Schlusing died 40 years ago. He is survived by the following children: E. W. Schlusing and Mrs. M. M. Ficken of the home address, H. C. Schlusing of Knob Noster, Mrs. Anna Williams and Mrs. A. E. Doeeance of Lamonte. Funeral services were at the home, by Rev. P. J. Allwell, pastor of the Knob Noster Methodist Church. Pall bearers were O. W. Peithman, Ray Anderson, H. A. Winter, George Ragner, George Crole, and Virgil Lane. Burial Knob Noster Cem. Homer Ficken told me that this was his greatgrandfather, and his farm was on the Pettis Co side of the Johnson-Pettis County line road, south of Hwy 50. So he was a Pettis Co resident and died there, but could stand at his mailbox and spit on Johnson Co and is buried in Knob Noster. The John F. Schlusing whose obit I just sent was the "John Slessing" on your list of Mo men in ILL CW units ("Sleseng" on pension papers!). I have John's "Muster Roll" he brought home from the war, that lists all of Co K, 25th ILL and there are a dozen others from Mo. This paper gives a detailed history of battles, etc. and some details not on the Adjutant General's roster. Don't know if it's practical to add these notes or not, but might answer some descendant's question. (Parentheses indicate added info): Missouri men recruited by Company K, 25th Illinois Infantry at Jefferson City and Otterville, Mo: Braton, William: (Braten on unit muster roll, discharged July 1862, Jacinto,Miss.) Harter, Christian: (wounded and captured Stone River 31 Dec 1862) Hunt, George: (no add'l info) Johnson, Thomas: (wounded Stone River 31 Dec 1862) Keeble, William: (Corinth, Miss) Klank, Mathias: (Klauk on muster roll) Mack, Henry: (wounded and captured Stone River 31 Dec 1862) Moore, Samuel: (death not noted on muster roll) Morgan, John: (John W on muster roll; wounded Stone River 31 Dec 1862) Slessing, John: (listed as Sleesing on muster roll, Sleseng on pension papers, actual name John F. Discharged Alatoona, Ga 30 Sept 1864, d. 1930, buried Knob Noster) Tyler, Joseph S: (Joseph P. on muster roll; deserted Bay Springs, Miss) Vandergriff, James S.: (Adj Gen notes not on muster roll) Weston, Joseph R.: (captured 2 Jan 1863 at Lavergne, Tenn) The "Muster Roll" is an interesting thing, big ornate scroll about 18x20, with pics of Lincoln and Union officers at top, and details of the unit's tribulations at bottom. These were produced to sell to the GI's by "M. E. Cole, Cincinnati, agents in every company". The 25th ILL was in battlles of Pea Ridge, Stones River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and Kennesaw Mountain. Excerpt from the "Memoranda": "Have marched over 3,500 miles - heaviest day's march was 38 miles. Many of the men were bare footed and bare headed." John Schluesing was 17 when he enlisted, and already a vet, having "lost his gun and blanket" at Battle of Cole Camp, Mo 13 June 1861 while serving with Benton Co Home Guards...
