"Gus" MOORE, 86, formerly of 1129 West 17th (Hutchinson, KS), died Dec 1, 1993, at Marion Manor, Stafford, VA. He was born Jan 28, 1907, at Chilhowee, Mo. He was empolyed by the Kansas State Unempoyment Insurance Office in Wichita as an interviewer starting in 1945. In 1963 he was appointed manager of the Kansas State Employment Office in Hutchinson. In 1965 he disigned and planned the construction of the employment office at 6th and Washington in Hutchinson. He retired in 1970. He was a member of the Hutchinson-Reno masonic Lodge No. 124, A.F. & A.M; was past president of the International Association of Personnel in Employment Security; served on the advisory committee of Central Kansas Area Vo-Tech Schools, and the advosory commission for business courses taught at Hutchinson Community College; was past chairman of the Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce Vocational Education Committee, and was organizer of Manpower Development Training Act courses at KSIR. He as an organizer of the Hutchinson Personnel Relations Council. On Feb. 27, 1935, he married C. Odena NEWMAN at Hutchinson (KS). She died Jan 29, 1983. On Aug. 12, 1983, he married Hazel METZGER at McPherson(KS). She died May 28, 1985. Survivors include: a daughter, Patricia SCHULTZ, Woodbridge, VA,; two grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Memorial graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Fairlawn Burial Park Hutchinson (KS). Masonic graveside rites will be conducted by the Hutchinson Lodge. For over two years she had suffered with a cancer, which caused her death, Wednesday, October 2, 4 o'clock in the evening. The end came very peacefully, she just went to sleep, but all day Monday her sufferings were dreadful. She had lived west of Chilhowee for over thirty years. She reared three grand children to manhood and was making her home with her youngest, James MOORE. She had lived a good christian life and was ready to lay down the hard ships and sufferings of this life. Sarah MOORE was a very quiet good woman. One of the family of seven children, she reared but one to woman hood. Mary MOORE, the mother of Amos, James and Sallie. After this daughter's death some 25 years ago she lived with her grandchildren. The funeral was preached by Rev. STEPHENS OF CHILHOWEE DIES Rites Will Be Conducted Wednesday for Dentist Who Practiced 40 Years Dr. Clarence Roy STEPHENS for 40 years a practicing dentist at Chilhowee, died about noon yesterday in St. Mary's Hospital in Jefferson City where he had undergone an operation Saturday. He had been in failing health for some time. He was 64 years old. The funeral will be held at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning at the Community Methodist Church at Chilhowee, the pastor, the Rev. Clinton J.RESER, officiating. Members of the Chilhowee Masonic Lodge will take part in the Masonic service. The burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Eldon. Surviving are his wife, the former Gretel Cecil SHANKS of Warrensburg; a step-son, Cecil SHANKS of Kansas City, and one brother, John G. STEPHENS of Butler. STEPHENS OF CHILHOWEE DIES Death Followed Cerebral Hemorrhage - Funeral Services This Morning By Our Correspondent - Funeral services for C. R. STEPHENS of Chilhowee who died at 10:15a.m. Wednesday morning at her home after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage the preceding Saturday, will be held this morning at 10 o'clock at the Community church in Chilhowee. The Rev. S. R. DILLMAN, a former pastor, will officiate. A quartet composed of Mrs. H. K. DOWNING, Miss Lettie TURNER, Frank ALBIN and B. A. FICKE, accompanied by Mrs. Luther PRESTON will sing "No Disappointments in Heaven" and "In the Upper Garden". Mrs. George RUSSELL of Warrensburg will sing as a solo, a favorite song of Mrs. Stephens. Grand officers of the Order of the Eastern Star will conduct the order's funeral rites, with Mrs. Grandy SPANGLER of Clinton, acting as the Worthy Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of Missouri. The following will serve as pallbearers: Dr. E.Y. PARE and Porter W. BAKER of Leeton, R.B HACKLER of Warrensburg; and L.R. CRUMBAUGH, Dr. J.S. BEATY, and Luke BYRAM of Chilhowee. Burial will be, according to Mrs. STEPHENS' request, in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Eldon, MO. Mrs. STEPHENS was well-known in the Warrensburg and entire Johnson county as she had visted the Easter Star chapters in the county at various towns. She had served as worthy matron of the Chilhowee chapter and at the time of her death was Missouri's grand representative to Tennessee. During the past spring she attended the grand chapter meeting in Tennessee. Mrs. STEPHENS has been in poor health for several months but her death was a shock to her many friends. She suffered the cerebral hemorrhage last Saturday and did not regain consciousness. Jewell STEPHENS was born August 10, 1900, the daughter of James and Alice MOORE. She had spent her entire life in Chilhowee. She was married to Dr. C.R. STEPHENS, on June 1, 1922, who with her mother, Alice STANSBERRY of Chilhowee, and a host of friends, survives. ******************************************************************** Surnames listed in obit below: MAXWELL, SURWALD, SURWALL SURWALD, Ralph (aka Ralph SURWALL) Chilhowee News, 19 March 1914 Ralph SURWALL, aged 31 years, 11 months and 15 days, passed away on March 8, at Arapahoe, Wyo., from tuberculosis. The body was shipped to Blairstown where it was interred last Thursday. Mr. SURWALL as a former resident of Blairstown where he has many relatives and friends. He was married to Miss Bessie MAXWELL who survives him. At the time of his death, Mr. SURWALD was in the employ of the C.N.& W as agent at Arapahoe. The services were in charge of A.F. and A.M. Interment was in the Blairstown Cemetery.
