LEE E. STOKES Lee E. Stokes, 87, Centerview, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2000, at Warrensburg Manor Care Center, Warrensburg, Missouri. He was born Saturday, February 22, 1913, in Hickory County, Missouri, the son of James S. and Minnie Morris Stokes. On December 6, 1943 he married Leota Shrout in Fort Scott, Kansas. He was a self employed mechanic and truck driver. Mr. Stokes was a member of the First Baptist Church in Centerview, Missouri. He has lived in Centerview over 40 years. He is survived by his wife, of the home; two daughters, Anna Hammons, Warrensburg, and Helen Thompson and husband, Roy, Sedalia; three sons, Jim Stokes and wife, Karla, Hillsboro, Illinois, Tom Stokes and wife, Joy, Ozark, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and one sister, Helen Brannick and husband, Bob, Gunn Barrel City, TX. He was preceeded in death by his parents, three sisters, two brothers, one granddaughter, and a son-in-law, Jim Hammons. Pallbearers were Brad Hammons, Bob Hammons, Bryan Stokes, Michael Stokes, Travis Stokes, Aaron Stokes, and Nathan Stokes. Interment was at Centerview Cemetery, Centerview, Missouri. NORA HALLAR Nora Hallar, 86, Pleasant Hill, Missouri, formerly of Holden, passed away Thursday, November 30, 2000, at Pleasant Hill Health Care Center, Pleasant Hill, Missouri. She was born Sunday, November 22, 1914, in Brotherton, Tennessee, the daughter of Willis and Clara Tallent Beasley. She graduated from Paseo High School in Kansas City. On December 15, 1956 she married Col. Fletcher Hallar in Russellville, Arkansas, he preceded her in death on August 3, 1998. She was a member of First Christian Church in Holden. Nora retired from Bendix Corporation, Kansas City, Missouri, in 1956. She is survived by one daughter, Linda Saling and husband, Buster, Pleasant Hill, Missouri; two sons, Robert Beasley, Raytown, and Richard Fitzgerel and wife Lou, Raytown; nine grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and one great great grandson. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Essie Lake, Vola Utley, and Cy Zumdahl; and five brothers, Willis, Ed, Jinx, Jess, and Major Beasley. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 2, 2000 at Williams Funeral Chapel, Holden. Rev. Jon Spalding officiated. Organist Julie Stout accompanied vocalist Stephanie Elkins. Pallbearers were Russell N. Raber, John Adams, Jeremy Flashpohler, David Adams, and Sam Raber. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, south of Kingsville. CHARLES DAVID ABNEY Charles David Abney, age 38, of Holden, passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2000 at a residence near Holden. He was born April 14, 1962 in Kansas City, MO. He has lived in Raytown, Lone Jack, and Kingsville before moving to Holden a year ago. He graduated from Raytown North High School in 1980. On December 4, 1987, he married Carol Cruwell in Independence, Mo. Charles was manager for Captain's Pets in Blue Springs for six years, and has been employed at Stahl Specialty Company in Kingsville for two years, where he was a leadman. He was in the U.S. Army in the mid 1980's. Survivors include his wife, Carol Abney, of the home; two sons, Jacob Abney and Jonathan Mitchell, both of the home; one stepson, Joshua Markley, of Blue Springs, Mo; and a daughter, Tina Cox, of Montgomery, AL. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 4 at Ben Cast & Son- Wood Funeral Home in Holden. Pallbearers were Glenn Perry, Duane Edmonds, Clint Turner, Gregg Whitehead, Jeremy Flashpohler, and Melvin Boyd. Interment was in the Sni-Mills Cemetery, Oak Grove, Missouri. CHARLES ALFRED WILLIAMS Charles Alfred Williams, 86, Kingsville, Missouri passed away Friday, December 1, 2000, at Pleasant Hill Health Care Center in Pleasant Hill, Missouri. He was born November 23, 1914 in Independence, Missouri, the son of Charles H. and Bertha (Martin) Williams. He moved to the Kingsville community in 1942. On August 13, 1950 he married Opal Moody Atkins. Mr. Williams was a dairy farmer and he worked for the Ford Motor Company in Kansas City for 30 years, retiring in 1980. After retirement he drove a school bus for the Kingsville R-I School District. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, visiting with his many friends, and traveling the United States and Canada with Opal. He was a member and Elder in the Kingsville Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and a member of Local 249 of the United Auto Workers Union. He leaves his wife, Opal Williams, of the home; a step son, Gerald Atkins, Parker, Kansas; a step daughter, Donna Harper, Kingsville; a nephew, Fred Howe, Pleasant Hill, Missouri; two sisters, Alice Patrick, Lee's Summit, and Helen Allen, Pleasant Hill; seven grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and one great great grandson; and other nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 5, 2000 at Ben Cast & Son-Wood Funeral Home, Holden, Missouri. Evangelist Don Carlile and Elder Bob Williams officiated. Leona Hobbs, organist accompanied Laura Jenkins and Donna Harper, duet. Pallbearers were Brad Harper, Mike Harper, Chris Harper, Charles Howe, Dennis Patrick, Mark Allen, and Roger Allen. ANNE ALICE SHAW Anne Alice Shaw, 86, Holden, Missouri, passed away Saturday, December 2, 2000 at Holden Manor Care Center, Holden, Missouri. She was born Wednesday, December 31, 1913, near Hadsell, Missouri, the daughter of David E. and Mary Alice Burden Nichols. She had attended Liberty School near Hadsell in Cass County. On November 28, 1952, she married Howard E. Shaw in Kansas City, Missouri. She had owned Anne's Beauty Shop in Holden and co-owned Shaw Photography Studio in Kansas City, Kansas. Mrs. Shaw was a member of First United Methodist Church, Holden; Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 3, Warrensburg; and Professional Photographers Association of greater Kansas City, Missouri. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Jim (Maxine) Allgood, Holden; one step daughter, Liz Campbell and husband Bruce, Decatur, Illinois; one stepson, Ken Shaw and wife Jean, Tuscon, Arizona; three grandchildren, Ed Allgood and wife Kim, Holden, Edie Phelps and husband Denny, Holden; Russell Allgood and wife Karen, Holden; two step granddaughters, Lisa and Christina, Decatur, Illinois; five great grandchildren , Craig Allgood, Lauren Allgood, Jake Allgood, Diana Allgood, and Jaime Phelps. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; six sisters Nancy Pilcher, Hilda Hughes, Mattie Lynes, Sue Thompson, Grace Briscoe, and Lizzie Noland; and three brothers, Jim, Charlie, and David Nichols. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 5, 2000 at Williams Funeral Chapel, Holden. Rev. John Ketcher officiated. Mrs. Julie Stout was organist. GORDON LEE BROOKS Gordon Lee Brooks, age 35, of Holden passed away on Monday, November 27, 2000 in a fire at an industrial site in Holden, where he was employed. He was born May 12, 1965 in Kansas City, MO, the son of Fred E., Jr. and Sylvia (Runyon) Brooks. He was a 1983 graduate of Holden High School, and had lived in the Holden area all of his life. Gordon had worked as an automotive mechanic several years. For six years, he was a sales representative for Brooks Products-Rainbow Sales in Warrensburg. He has been a painter at Gilcrest Equipment Company in Holden since March of 2000. He was a guitarist, enjoyed playing and collecting guitars, and he had an extensive collection of LP albums. Survivors include one son, Jesse Brooks, of New Braunfels, Tx; his parents, Fred E. Jr. and Sylvia Brooks, of the home; one brother Mark Brooks, of Warrensburg; and two sisters, Colette Page, of Pleasant Hill, Mo and Judy Kathleen Bradley, of Unionville, Mo. He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred E. Brooks, III, in 1993. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 30, at the Ben Cast & Son-Wood Funeral Home, Holden. The services were officiated by Reverend Leland Holland and Reverend Doug Bradley. Marlene Price was the organist and Judy Bradley sang a solo. Pallbearers were Jim Koetting, Sam Shafer, Clint Tillotson, Tim Hoover, Jeff Medwin, and Don Hartwell. Interment was in Elm Spring Cemetery, Kingsville, Mo. HELEN JOAN SMITH Helen Joan Smith, age 71, of Holden, passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2000, at home. She was born July 6, 1929 in Holden, the daughter of James Garfield and Beulah Grace (Hammontree) Lowe. She lived in the Holden community for most of her life. On April, 10, 1949 she married Kenneth Eugene Smith in Holden. Helen was a homemaker. She taught two years, 1948 and 1949, at King School, near Holden. She loved her grandchildren and traveling. She was a charter member of the Holden Baptist Temple in Holden. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Smith, of the home; three sons, Russell Smith, of Holden, Wayne Smith of Kingsville, and Melvin Smith of Holden; one daughter Sharon Alvis, Blairstown, Mo; two brothers, William Lowe, Holden, and George Lowe, Belton, Missouri; and nine grandchildren. A sister, Betty Eissler, preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 2 at the Ben Cast & Son-Wood Funeral Home, Holden. Officiating was the Reverend George Hecker. Musicians were Rebecca Lowe, organist; Ed Hill, soloist; Brenda Atkinson and Phyllis Peacock, duet. Pallbearers were John Reynolds, Ed Hill, Merril Sechrest, Danny Eissler, Jerry Atkinson, and Gary Snyder. Honorary pallbearers were Brian Smith, Kevin Smith, Corey Smith, Brant Smith, and Kyler Smith. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.
