OBITUARY FOR THOMAS M. LIVENGOOD, December, 1909: "NEW HOME And winter has come in earnest, and we are not ready for it either . . . Uncle Thomas Livengood passed away Saturday night at 10:05 o'clock after a protracted illness and a great deal of suffering. He longed to go and be relieved from suffering. Thomas M. Livengood was born in North Carolina, Feb. 14th, 1836 and died December 4th, 1909, being 73 years, 9 months and 20 days old. He moved with his father's family to Arkansas when about 4 years old. Came with his parents to Johnson county, Mo., when about 14 years old, and there grew to manhood and was married to Miss Mary A. Wiley in 1864. To this union was born 7 children, five of them survive him, two died in childhood, a boy and a girl, the five which remain are all men and have families. His wife preceded him to the unknown, passing away one year ago last April. His sons are John, who lives near Ft. Scott, Kan.; Hugh, who moved to Colorado this fall and could not be at the funeral; William, who is living near Foster, and Ury, who resides near New Home, and with whom Uncle Thomas was living and where he died; four of the boys were at the funeral. Uncle Thomas moved from Johnson county to Bates county somewhere in the seventies, and settled near New Home, and has lived in the neighborhood ever since. He was a good neighbor, a good citizen and a good man. He united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Salem in Johnson County in 1875, and after coming to Bates county, united with C. P. Church at Salem, near Foster, where his body was laid away today amidst the falling flake of snow by the side of the remains of his life companion, whose body was laid to rest one year ago last April. After a short funeral service conducted by the writer in the presence of an appreciative sympathizing audience, and rather a large audience, considering the very inclement weather, composed largely of old friends and neighbors. And after performing the last labor of love for the body and paying an humble tribute of respect to his memory, we could but commend the spirit to the God, who gave it, the God in whom he believed and trusted.
