* Holden Progress March 2, 1911 C.M. Burden died at his home 2 miles southwest of Hadsell, Feb. 21 (1911). He was born in Kentucky about 85 years ago. He came to Missouri when seven years old, the family home being north of Holden. Here he lived until he became of age when he took the “gold fever”. He made the trip to California in an ox wagon, fighting Indians almost every day. He made two more ox wagon trips, then made several by rail. He was married three times; two children by his first wife, Charles and Mary, both dead; three by his second wife, Jennie, Sallie living and Hattie dead; one by the third which died in infancy. “Uncle Charley” was one of the pioneers of this section and the story of his life would feel a volume. He was the plaintiff in the renowned dog, which attracted attention far beyond the limits of this state. It was known as the old Drum hound case. In which the late Sen. Vest delivered his celebrated “Eulogy on the Dog” in defense of old Drum. Leonidas Hornsby, Burden’s borther-in-law, the defendant, died several years ago, at which time they were reconciled. “Uncle Charley was brave, honest and true. His word was as gold, and his friendship greatly to be sought. He will live long in loving memory of and host of friends”. *Chanute City Paper? 2-9-1921 Death Terminates 4-Year Illness Funeral of C.
