St. Clair County, Michigan

Index to Local Newspapers

created by Marge Owens

The following index was created to aid researchers discover information about their ancestors who passed through St. Clair County, Michigan. These newspapers contain a wealth of information, for now, accessible only to those fortunate enough to visit our local public library in Port Huron and (I believe) the state library in Lansing, Michigan. This index is being posted on the internet to make this information more available to you.

This index was created by a special lady. Marge Owens spent innumerable hours reading these old newspapers, creating index cards for each name mentioned and then putting them in order. The set is complete to about October 1939. Sadly, Marge passed away and further work on this index has been suspended. I'd like to thank Marge and many others for their contributions to St. Clair County genealogy.

These local newspapers can be viewed on microfilm at the St. Clair County Public Library. If you are unable to visit the library, they also offer research services. Their fees are a minimum of $7.50, research of a half-hour or more ($20), first copy fee ($2) and additional copies ($0.25).

Notes

Why letters were posted as being at the post office...

Letters were sent to post offices where residents would have to pick up their own mail. In 1847, the 5 cent Benjamin Franklin and the 10 cent George Washington stamps were the first stamps issued. Before 1855, prepaid postage was optional. This meant the recipients had to pay to get their mail. After 1855, prepaid postage became mandatory.
