The PITTS SCHOOL HOUSE in Skowhegan

There is a picture of it on page 531 of "Skowhegan on the Kennebec" by Louise Coburn.  Lucinda A. Adams, my wife's ancestor was a teacher there in the 1860s.  The school stands or stood in District No. 5 east of the road a little way south of what was the homestead of Capt. Sylvanus Pitts and later of William B. Pitts.  The school was kept in good repair and used until at least beyond 1936 when the book was written.

There is a section on " Schoolhouse Conversions, " pages 59 through 63A, in Voice on the Kennebec, A Description of the Development of Skowhegan During the Years 1941-1981, edited by Kathleen A. Martin. This book contains much valuable information such as the description of industry during that 40-year period (pp. 169-184).  Though out of print, copies are available at the state and local libraries and Maine Historical Society.
