Looking for information on the descendants of Isaac Thompson, Jr. (1781- 1835), who moved to Rochester in 1814. He was a gravestone carver, as was his father, brother and son Zebulon H. Thompson (1813-1896). Both Isaac & Zebulon are buried in Rochester. A granddaughter of Isaac, Jr. named Caroline Leonard Goodenough published a genealogy in 1928 in which she reports the following: “On this little farm Grandfather Isaac Thompson supported his growing family of seven children, eking out his slender resources by making shoes for his own family and others, and especially by taking up the business of stone-cutting, making many of the slate grave-stones which are now seen in the Rochester cemetery, on some of which we recognize grandfather’s willow-tree pattern, and his mourning-figure pattern we have found among the family papers. This pattern sheet, and a memorandum book about the Thompson family is all we now possess of our good grandfather’s work, except that his old house, now used as a tenement, is still standing.” This genealogy was entitled: “Memoirs of the Leonard, Thompson and Haskell Families.” I am finishing a book on eastern Massachusetts gravestone carvers active from 1770 through 1870 and would like to locate this “pattern sheet” if it still exists. Does anyone know a living descendent of this family who might know whether it does? --------------------------------------------------

I am researching the origins of all the towns with the name of Rochester in the U.S. I have looked through all your web links but, aside from the date of your founding (1679) I cannot discover the "why" of the selection of your name?? Are you named after the section in England or Lord Rochester, or (as in the case of N.Y.'s Rochester) a Col. in the Revolutionary War? Thanks for your help. I am looking for information about my ancestor, Benjamin Gifford, who was born about 1810 or 1811, supposedly in Rochester or Fairhaven. He married in Rochester in 1832 to Betsey Barstow and they lived in Fairhaven thereafter. Benjammin's brother was William Gifford, 1798- 1903, who was born in Rochester and died in Michigan. The parents of William and Benjamin were William Gifford and Sarah Samson or Sampson who married in 1791 in Dartmouth. They may have lived in Rochester and possibly died there. No one has been able to trace this family. Some sources say William Gifford who married Sarah Samson was born in 1754 and died in 1805 in Westport. However, this cannot be my relative as he would have had to have been alive in 1810 based upon Benjamin's year of birth. Any info is appreciated. Thanks, Bob Hubbard

I am seeking information regarding ELIZABETH NYE, b. Rochester, MA 20 Jun 1748. Her parents were: Nathan Nye and Patience Percival. On 25 Nov 1770, Elizabeth Nye m. NATHAN SAVORY in Wareham, MA. They had five children: Patience 1772, Nathan 1774, Mercy 1776, Amelia 1778, and Aaron 1780. Nathan Savory served wit the colonial army at the 1st battle for Fort Ticondaroga, in the early years of the Revolution; but after time had doubts about the war. He later refused to rejoin the army, citing Quaker sympathies. After the war (~1783), Nathan Savory left -or- was forced from MA by himself, due no doubt to his alleged loyalist views. He settled in Digby, NS and remarried Deidamia Sabin there in 1785. They had 12 children. (I'm descended from one of them.) I'm wondering if Nathan ever legally DIVORCED Elizabeth (Nye) Savory before he left -OR- did he simply leave without a divorce -OR- had she died between 1780 and 1783? I recently learned that an Elizabeth Savory died in Rochester, MA on 24 Dec 1839 (age 90) [Rochester, MA VRs, Deaths, page 428]. That would seem right, age-wise, assuming that Elizabeth (Nye) Savory NEITHER remarried NOR moved elsewhere; but there were other Savorys living in the Rochester area at that time, so the water remains somewhat muddied. Might there be any other material which could prove (or disprove) whether the Elizabeth Savory who died in 1839 is Elizabeth (Nye) Savory, first wife of Nathan Savory? Thank you for your help. I can’t find much info about Nathaniel except in the Census (missing 1840). Julia may have never married but she had a daughter Elizabeth who married Ebenezer Randall Hathaway and she died before her mother.
