Inventory
of Estate of Elisha Taylor
Transcribed
by Diane Kay Gilbert Gelder
I thought this inventory an interesting glimpse into the way of
life in the early 1800s.
This gentleman, Elisha Taylor, is thought to have been a son of
Elisha and Jerusha (Hutshins) Taylor. He was born about 1780 and
passed away just as he was starting his adult life.
New-Ark eventually became Newark, New Jersey. Once again, I transcribed
these in 2000 and am responsible for any errors and would be delighted
to have my name linked to them. All spelling is as originally
wrought.
"A Publication of Elisha Taylor's Death in the New Ark Papers
- Written by the Rev. E.D. Griffin, A.D. 1802
Died. - On the 19th inst. in the 22nd year of his age, Elisha
Taylor, a native of Tyringham (Mass.) but for three years past,
a resident and School Master in this town. Amiable and beloved
as a man, Exemplary as a Christian, and acceptable as an Instructor
he died much lamented by all his acquaintance, and especially
by his pupils; a large number of whom followed the Hearse, and
by their tears evinced the sincerity of their grief. Called to
resign his breath at a distance from his Native home, he was by
strangers honored and by strangers mourned. "Early, bright,
transient, as the morning dew," He sparkled, was exhaled,
and went to heaven.
Copied by Salmon Taylor of New-Ark, August 2nd, AD 1802"
And a second document:
"New Ark, August 26th, AD 1802
