JENKS CEMETERY, CHESHIRE, BERKSHIRE COUNTY, MASSACHUSETTS

The Jenks Family Cemetery off Wells Road. This cemetery has long been forgotten and buried on rural farmland. In order to access it, you must go through the backyard of a family living on Wells Rd. The path to the cemetery is guarded by a Rotweiler, and although the owners say he is friendly, I recommend calling them ahead of time if you plan on visiting. They do like visitors to the cemetery. Once you sneak past "pooch" (not his real name) you climb up a hill and through some brush, you walk into the cemetery. If you visit it in the fall or the early spring it seems very stark and forgotten. Visiting the cemetery in May, I was shocked by how beautiful the yellow wildflowers made the cemetery. A great wish of mine would be to clean up the cemetery. 10 years ago, Peter White visited the cemetery after the town of Cheshire had done their clean up for the 200 year celebration. He took a pole and began to prod the ground. He found two stones buried in the earth. Ricky Leab, a Berkshire Athenaeum librarian, checked a recording of this cemetery done in the early 1900s. They never recorded Thomas's stone. Thomas's stone had been buried for over 75 years. Are there more buried stones in this cemetery? Is it possible that Jesse Jenks and his second wife, Abigail Sayles, are buried in this cemetery? Please visit Peter's website for more information on the Jenks family.
