SILAS FANNIN by Ralph Sayre sayrehouse@juno.com

In KENTUCKY (1842, 1845, 1848)

There were three FANNON heads of household in Lawrence County 1830 Kentucky Census. David and Joseph Fannon in the 20-29 age range, and Bryan Fannon, Sr. in the 70-79 age range. Silas would have been age 6-8 in 1830. David had one male in the 5-9 age range, and Joseph had two males in the 5-9 age range. If I read the censuses correctly, this David was head of household in Carter County , in 1840, with a male in the 15-19 age range in which Silas would be. He was still in Carter County 1850 Kentucky Census with that male (Burrell, age 27) in the same age group as Silas. This may eliminate David as a suspect, and just leave Joseph. I didnt find Joseph in the Lawrence County 1840 Kentucky Census; only John, Philip, James, William, and Isaac. I think James should be Joseph as he was the only one listed having two males in the age group of Silas, and he appears 10 years older than the Joseph listed in 1830.

According to that 1850 Census, David and Joseph were both born in Virginia, David about 1800 and Joseph about 1809. The older Bryan Sr. in 1830 may or may not have been father of David and Joseph.

Joseph was head of household in Lawrence County 1850 Kentucky Census, apparently a widower, with only one male in the age group of Silas (Achilles, 21). A Joseph Fannin married Elizabeth Kitchen in Lawrence County in 1822, and they would be candidates for parents of Silas. In Wayne County 1850 Virginia Census, Silas is listed as age 28, (b. 1822 Ky) head of his household in Wayne County , (West) Virginia .  Recently another researcher suggested that the other male could have been Bryant Fannin, born about 1825, who married Louisa Clay, daughter of Bartley Clay. This, too, is logical especially if the elder Bryant Fannin were Josephs father.  Briant first appeared in the Lawrence County Tax records of 1848.

One puzzling fact making it difficult to relate Silas to the older Fannins is the use of given names for the children. None were named David or Joseph. The names John, Thomas, George, and William were used, but they could have come from the Ferguson side. Silas obviously distanced himself from his former life and stuck close to his in-laws, the Fergusons in Wayne County at least until after 1880.

I havent found where Silas (and several of his family) went after 1887. The Wayne County censuses all had errors for his family, but he was definitely found in Wayne County , Butler District, (West) Virginia 1850 through 1880. Children of Silas and Mary ( Ferguson ) Fannin were: Theodore, Easton , Rebecca, Jeremiah, John, Thomas, George Washington, Mary Belle, Calista, and William. By census, only Easton was born in Kentucky . Easton s family appeared to be the only ones who stayed in West Virginia 1900 and after.

Fannon                                  William

Ferguson                                Saml.

Grayston                                John (I list this because it is probably Gragston, and there was mention of

a Gragston Creek in Wayne County description of property transfer involving Silas Fannin.)

Silas was likely in one of the Fannon households in 1841 Lawrence County . Best guess by information had April 17, 2004 would be Joseph.

Found a Silas G. Wooten/Wooton in several of these tax lists. Maybe Silas Fannin got his name from him or same source.

Silas, when found was listed close to Joseph and Philip, but the Lawrence County  Kentucky Census did not list a male in Silas age group in Philips household.

**I had suspected that this Rebecca may be Silas mother because his first daughter was named Rebecca. However, if age is listed correctly in 1850 census, she appears too young.
