PIONEER FAMILIES Of EASTERN AND SOUTHEASTERN KENTUCKY BY WILLIAM
C. KOZEE
There were approximately 912 families living in Knox County in 1810, as shown by original tax lists and other public records. Peter Engle, assistant to Joseph Crockett, United States Marshal for the District of Kentucky, enumerated the third decennial census and on December 23, 1810, he certified and reported an enumeration aggregating 5,875. Of this number 2,867 were white males, 2,661 white females, 307 negro slaves and 40 free colored. Below are given the heads of families and/or taxpayers as of the year 1810 together with the number of negro slaves owned by each slaveholder. |
