 James Valentine Gross (aka Captain) was the 5th child of James Covy Gross and Elizabeth (Betsy Ann) Howard.  He was born in 1883 and died 1 April 1924.  He married Fannie Taylor in 1912 Harlan Co., KY.  Fannie was the daughter of Mitchell Monroe Taylor.  James had two children, Buela Roberta Gross and Gullian Gross.  James served in World War I with the rank of Captain.  After his return, he served as the police chief in Lynch, KY.  He was killed while serving in that position.
