Sergeant Brooks was a member of the 77th Engineer Combat Company, 25th Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in South Korea on December 25, 1950. Sergeant Brooks was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Providence Man Killed in Korea
The first report of a Providence man having been killed in action in Korea has come to his family. Sgt. Jewell Brooks, 31, colored, was killed there on Dec. 25 according to information received Tuesday from the Secretary of the Army. Sgt. Brooks, with the 77th Engineer Combat Company, had been in Korea six months. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in New Guinea for three years, and reenlisted when time came for his discharge. Survivors are the wife, Beatrice; his mother, Mrs. Lessie Kaiser; a daughter, Juvine; and a son, Arvel. This is the second Webster county man to be reported killed in Korea. Billie Joe Ashby, 19, of Onton was reported killed in action on Nov. 27.

Sgt. Brooks' Wife Receives Purple Heart
The Purple Heart has been awarded posthumously to Sgt. Jewell Brooks, colored, of Providence, for wounds received in action resulting in his death on Dec. 25, 1950. The citation, signed by the Secretary of the Army and the Adjutant General, was sent Sgt. Brooks' wife, Beatrice, who was notified recently of his death in action in Korea.

Body of Soldier Arrives in States
Mrs. Beatrice H. Brooks, Providence, has received a letter from Col. James B. Clearwater advising her that the remains of her husband, Sgt. Jewell Brooks, who was killed in Korea, have arrived in the United States. The letter states that she will be notified later as to time and arrival in Providence.
