Wilson County is located in the southeast corner of Kansas, and is bounded by Woodson County to the north; Allen and Neosho counties to the north east and east; Labette and Montgomery to the southeast and south; Elk to the southwest; and Greenwood to the northwest. The county seat is Fredonia, and largest city is Neodesha. Wilson County is an original county, established in August, 1855. It was named for Col. Hiero T. Wilson, a postmaster and prominent citizen of Ft. Scott. The county was still within the Osage Indian Reserve and was not originally open to settlement by whites. Settlers began arriving in 1857, but no attempt to officially organize the county was made until 1864.
