Republic county is located in the north central part of Kansas, on the northern southern border of Nebraska. Its northern border includes Thayer and a small part of Nuckolls counties, Nebraska; Washington county (KS) to the east; Cloud county to the south; and to the west, it is bordered by Jewell county. It was formed in 1860 from Cloud and Washington counties; its county seat is in Belleville.
