Allen County was organized in 1855, one of the original counties established by the first territorial legislature. It is in southeastern Kansas, bounded to the north and northeast by Anderson and Linn Counties; to the east by Bourbon County; to the south and southwest by Neosho and Wilson Counties; and to the west and northwest by Woodson and Coffey Counties. Its county seat and largest city is Iola. Allen County was named for William Allen, a US senator from Ohio. The first white settlers arrived early in 1855, settling near the Neosho River. Many of the early settlers were pro-slavery men, although few slaves were brought into the county. And because of the antagonism of the freestate settlers, most of the slaves were granted their freedom or removed from the area.
