Brief County History
Madison County records begin in 1812. Madison County was created
by proclamation of Governor Ninian Edwards on September 12, 1812.
At the time of the proclamation, Madison County extended as far
east as the Wabash River on the Indiana border and as far north
as the northern border of Illinois. As the area was divided into
various counties, the appropriate records went to their pertinent
counties. Therefore, the records in the recorder's office dating
back to 1812 are records of the lands that are the present Madison
County.
Land Title Documents
In searching land records, it is most helpful to have the name
of the grantor (seller) and/or grantee (buyer), approximate date
of the purchase, and brief legal description.
Property records may be searched by: Grantor/Grantee names, Legal
Description, Parcel Identification Number, Document Number or
Book/Page, or Trust Number or reference number. The Grantor/Grantee
Index prior to June 1985 is found in Books, from June 1985 to
the present the index is on the computer
The following records may be found in the Recorder's Office: Warranty
Deeds, Quit Claim Deeds, Contracts for Deed, Executor's Deeds
and Administrator's Deeds, Sheriff's Deeds and Judge's Deeds,
Certificates of Sale of Purchase, Tax Deeds, Trustee's Deeds,
and Mortgage or Trust Deeds/Deeds in Trust
