paul kowall

 

Mr. Paul Kowall, age 88, of Arrowood Pointe Blairsville, formerly of Winterhaven and also of Lakeland, FL, passed away on Monday, July 17, 2006 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mr. Kowall was born on May 16, 1918 in Brooklyn, NY.  The son of the late John Kowalski and the late Veronica Nowacki Kowalski.  He was Chief and Director of the Fireman’s Vocational School in Bethpage Long Island, NY.  He was also a lifetime volunteer Fireman.  He lived for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, which he found much pleasure in.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Pabst Kowall and a sister, Eleanor Petrullo.  Mr. Kowall was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving Mr. Kowall are one daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Carl Anderson of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, John and Barbara Kowall of Levittown, NY; three grandchildren, Keri Young, Carl Anderson Jr., and John Kowall; three great-grandchildren, Jordan Young, Andrew Young, and Collin Anderson, and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 21, 2006 at 10 a.m. from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Richard Wise officiating.  Special music was presented by Mindy Combs.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Carl Anderson, Jeff young, John Kowall, James Jordan, John Meek, Gary Gilmer, and Carl Anderson, JR.  Intombment followed on Monday July 24, 2006 at 11 a.m. from the Memorial Gardens Cemetery in St. Petersburg, FL.  In Lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Union County Volunteer Fire Dept. of your choice in Mr. Kowalls memory.

priscilla may brown

 

Mrs. Priscilla May Brown of Stonehenge Murphy Hwy Blairsville, formerly of Clearwater, FL passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Brown was born on September 29, 1911 in Gloucester, MA.  The daughter of the late Harold Orne and the late Catherine MacCloud Orne.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph K. Brown; two sisters, Shirley Jackson and Audrey Young, and by a brother, Harold Orne Jr.  Mrs. Brown was of the Episcopal faith.

Surviving Mrs. Brown are one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Barbara Ann Thompson of Hiawassee; two grandchildren, Laura Osborne of Terrell, NC, David Thompson of Manderville, LA; four great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced later.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to your favorite Humane Society of your choice in Mrs. Brown’s memory.

wayne lester thompson

 

Mr. Wayne Lester Thompson, age 93, of Harrisburg Road, Summerville, Georgia, Teloga Community, passed away Tuesday morning at his residence.  A native of Union County, Georgia he was born to the late Wesley N. and Catherine Little Thompson on August 18, 1912.  He was a member of Bethaney Baptist (The Line) Church, a member of Dooley Lodge F & AM #356, and was the founding Worthy Patron of Notla Chapter of Eastern Star #471; received B.S. degree from North Georgia College in Dahlonega, GA, M.S. Degree from Western Carolina College in Crellowhee, NC and also attended Young Harris College and Peabody College in Nashville, TN.  Mr. Thompson served thirty-five years in Union County Georgia School System retiring in 1972 as Union County Superintendent of Schools.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, the late Nema Hughes Thompson, sisters, the late Edith Cobb, the late Ethel Loudermilk, and a brother, the late Waylen Thompson.

Surviving are his wife, Christine Thompson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Susan Thompson and Tim and Kathy Thompson; five grandsons-Scott and Susan Thompson, Don and Erica Thompson, Wes Thompson, Ben Thompson, Luke Thompson; great-grandchildren-Jacob Thompson and Sydnee Thompson, all of Summerville.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 2 p.m. from the J.D. Hill memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Dr. Roger Martin and Mr. Elmer Thomson officiating.  Interment in Greehills Memory Garden.  Active pallbearers were Scott Thompson, Don Thompson, Wes Thompson, Ben Thompson, Luke Thompson and Jason Geddie.  The family received friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 12 noon until 2 p.m.

austine hunter wallis

 

Mrs. Austine Hunter Wallis, age 78, of Athens, Georgia, formerly of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, July 20, 2006.

Mrs. Wallis was born Wednesday, October 12, 1927, in Union County, Georgia to the late William Jess Hunter and Sadie Collins Hunter.  She was a member of Choestoe Baptist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, Byron Herbert Reece Historical Society and Young Harris alumna.  She was a beloved educator for 59 years in the Georgia School System.  She began her education at Young Harris College and went on to pursue degrees at Vanderbilt, LSU and a Doctorate from UGA.  She was preceded in death by husband, George Wallis; brothers: Jack Creed Hunter, Jasper Hunter and William Jack Hunter.

Survivors include: son, Andrew Wallis of Whitter, California; daughter & son-in-law, Susan and Sean Fahey of Vienna, Virginia; brother, Charles Hunter of Blairsville, Georgia; sister, Sue Souther of Northville, Michigan; grandson, Michael Fahey, several nieces and nephews, and many friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 24, 2006 at 3:00 P.M. from the Susan B. Harris Chapel at Young Harris College with Dr. John Kay officiating.  Music was provided by Bill and Marianne Fox.  Interment followed in Choestoe Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Sean Fahey, Scott Souther, Alex Ragland, Derrick Powell, Buddy Hunter, Neal Hunter, Chip Woods.

The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-9, Sunday evening July 23.

Mrs. Marie Moultrie, age 76, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2006 at Murphy Medical Center Nursing Home.

Mrs. Moultrie was born Sunday, September 15, 1929, in Essex County, New Jersey to the late Harry Fort and Mae Chavis Fort.  She was a member of Pentacostal Church of Christ, in Newark, New Jersey.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Leon Fort.

Survivors include: daughter & son-in-law, Michele and Bill Bargas, who was like a son, of Blairsville; daughter & son-in-law, Pamela and Mujahid Sharif of Newark, new Jersey; sister, Dorothy Howard of Woodbridge, New Jersey; brothers, Harold Fort of East Orange, New Jersey; and Will Fort of El Cahon, California; grandson, Tony Bargas of Clearwater, Florida; granddaughter, Nikki Bargas of Raleigh, North Carolina; granddaughter, Lisa Bargas of Atlanta, Georgia; grandson, Kyle Owens of Newark, New Jersey; great-grandson, Tony Bargas, Jr., great-granddaughters, Brittany Islam and Kyla Anderson.

The family will received friends at Cochran Funeral Home, in Blairsville, from 1-3 p.m., Wednesday, July 26.

martha clayton clement

 

Martha Clayton Clement, age 53, passed away Monday, July 10, 2006 after suffering a heart attack at her home in Snellville, GA.

She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Gerald Clement; her sons Barry Clement of Atlanta and Andrew (Andy) of Snellville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Vachel Pennebaker of Naples, FL, Judy and Harry Kilpatrick of Jackson, GA, Pam and Kip Rabem of Bremen, GA; and brother-in-law Jeff Clement of Snellville.  Mrs. Clement was born to David and Mary Clayton in Atlanta on September 19, 1952.  Martha attended Whiteford Elementary School and graduated in 1970 from East Atlanta High School.  Following a drug reaction at age three, Martha became deaf.  Thanks to her father’s advocacy, Martha became one of the first students in the Atlanta Public School System to receive individualized K-12 instruction from a Speech teacher specifically for the hearing impaired.  Establishing the policy which would allow all hearing impaired students to receive equal education.

After graduation, Martha joined the Georgia State Patrol, where she became the second female license examiner in Georgia and was instrumental in establishing the TDD system to assist hearing impaired applicants in obtaining driver’s licenses.  She retired from the Georgia State Patrol in 1996 as a Senior License Examiner after 26 years of service.  During this time, Martha also served on the Georgia Council for the Hearing Impaired and was instrumental in establishing the Police Explorers in Snellville.

Since retirement, Martha pursued her interest in genealogical research as a member of the Union County Historical Society, authoring articles for several genealogical publications and websites.  Since 1998, Martha has been a full-time volunteer with the McConnell Middle Scholl in Grayson where she has left a legacy of love to hundreds of students.  Martha’s courage was inspirational; her gentle and compassionate spirit touched everyone she knew; her generosity extended to any in need; her love was accepting and unconditional; her deep faith was the foundation of her sweet spirit.  She is beloved by the family and friends who are left behind.

Visitation was held on Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m.  Services were held at Tom Wages Funeral Home, 3705 Hwy 78 West, Snellville, GA 30078 on Thursday, July 13th at 11 a.m.  As Martha has always been an advocate for the less fortunate, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, please make donations to Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC) located at 5900 Lewis Road, Stone Mountain, GA 30083.  Tom M.
