Ann akins

 

            Ann Akins, age 63, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Union General Hospital in Blairsville. 

Mrs. Akins was born Monday, April 29, 1946 in Union County, GA, to the late Norman McCollum and Bonnie McCollum.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Union County.  Ann had also been active in the Order of the Eastern Star and served on the Union County Board of Registrars.  She had worked as a paraprofessional in the counselor’s office of Union County high School.  Ann was preceded in death by a daughter, Angie Akins Turner; her father, Norman McCollum; and a sister, Evelyn Weaver.   

            Surviving family members include her loving husband, William H. Akins, Sr. of Blairsville; mother, Bonnie McCollum of Blairsville’ son & daughter-in-law, William H. Jr. and Jan Akins of Lithia Springs, GA; daughter & son-in-law, Kimberly Grace and Mike Loccisano of Youngstown, Ohio; brothers: Otis McCollum of Blairsville; Clinton McCollum of Lula, GA; Jimmy McCollum and Billy McCollum, both of Blairsville; sisters, Charlene Hamby and Cathy Newton, both of Blairsville; grandchildren: William H. Akins III, Tyler Akins, Amelia Ann Turner, Isabella Grace Loccisano and Michaela Grace Loccisano, many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services were held Monday, May 4, 2009 at 11 AM from the First United Methodist church of Union County with Rev. Ben Lewis officiating.  Music was provided by Debbie Steed, Jeff Bauman, Keith DeFoor and Emete Bas.  Interment followed in Union Memory Gardens.  Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Trey Akins, Tyler Akins, Tyler McCollum, Bob Head, Jim McAffee and Hoyt Raper. 

            The family received friends at the funeral home from 5-9, Sunday, May 3.

            If you wish, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church of Union County Building Fund or to the American Cancer Society or to the Glenda Gooch House.

sherman edward dowe

 

            Mr. Sherman Edward Dowe age 89 of Rocky Circle, Blairsville passed away on Tuesday, April28, 009 in the Union General Hospital in Blairsville following an extended illness.  Mr. Dowe was born on Nov. 12,  1919 in Horicon, WI, son of the late Irma Griffith.  Mr. Dowe studied at the Milwaukee Art Academy, as well as studying with renowned water color instructors Charles Reid, Tony Couch, Jeanne Dobie and others.  He spent the years from 1947-1984 working in the Graphic and Commercial Art field.  Mr. Dowe has been affiliated with the following galleries, Tritt Gallery of Decatur, GA, Owltown Gallery of Blairsville, Appalachian of Young Harris.  Mr. Dowe has paintings hanging in many private homes and business offices around the country.  Mr. Dowe was a member of Coosa United Methodist Church. 

            Surviving Mr. Dowe are his loving wife of sixty five years, Olive (Tiny) Dowe of Blairsville, one daughter and son-in-law, Danna Mae and Robert Hoffmann of Cedarburg, WA, one son, Steven Edward Dowe of Dousman, WI, one sister, Ethelwyn Yerges of Puyallup, WA, many other relatives and friends also survive.

            A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2009at 2 p.m. from the Coosa United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Midkiff  officiating.  Special music was presented by James Stephens.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation in memory of Mr. Dowe.

jane kerr

 

            Mrs. Jane Kerr, age 83, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at her home. 

Mrs. Kerr was born Sunday, November 29, 1925 in Essex County, New Jersey, to the late Samuel and Mary Micknic.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Allan Kerr, in 1985. 

            Surviving family members include: son, William “Giz” Kerr of Blairsville; daughter, Judy & Ken Hubert of Blairsville; son, Doug & Laura Kerr of Rutherford, New Jersey; son, Cliff & Susan Kerr, of Delaware; son, Roger & Maria Kerr of West Orange, New Jersey; son, Bobby Kerr, of New Jersey; daughter, Mary & Wade Bingham, of Pennseylvania; (sic) and 16 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren also survive.

            Funeral services were held Friday, May 1, 2009 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Jenkins officiating.  Special music was presented by David Chatham.  Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Willy Kerry, David Land, Wade Brigham, Kyle Brigham, Matthew Kerr and Ken Hubert.  Interment followed in Union memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville.  

            The family received friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m., Thursday, April 30.
