Byers and Related Families

Last year and again this year the descendants of David McClain Byers(second family) held a family reunion at Etowah, TN.  Sponsored by Mary Ruth Byers Garret and other children of Jack Byers. Some came all the way from Reno to this one.  Several folks from Union County GA also attended including this writer.  This years reunion in May was attended by this writer again.  Folks from several states attended.  Also, Jerry Byers and wife Carolyn from Habersham County, GA attended.  Jerry is a descendant of the Rev. Joseph Judson Byers, the rest of us are descended from David#1 Byers(bro to the Rev) and Rebecca McClain.
 
A Byers reunion was held Sat. Oct. 4th at Dalton GA.  This was sponsored by the grandchildren of Luther Byers.  This writer attended with his wife Nami and made the trip with Jerry Byers and wife Carolyn from Habersham County.  This reunion was sponsored by Sue Redwine and Mae Dell Pierce, gnd-daus of Luther Byers.  Luther was bro to this writer's gnd-father, Nick Byers.
 
Of course, all the above bunch are descended from Samuel Byers and Margaret Handley..........
 
And this writer finally got the footstones for CSA vets Francis Marion Byers(Old Brasstown Cemetery), Ephraim Byers, Jr.(Old Brasstown Cemetery), David Byers(Mt. Zion Cemetery), and Jasper Byers(we put a memorial stone between the graves of his parents(Ephraim and Milly Byers, Mt. Zion Cemetery. Jasper died at an  army hospital in Atlanta) sons of Ephraim Byers Sr. These footstones have unit and dates of birth and death.  Their brother, Cebrum(Cebe) Byers(Ivy Log Cemetery) already had a marker, thanks to the efforts of the late Ella Faye Byers of Union County, GA.
 
This year the Union County Historical Society was given the log cabin last lived in by Nick and Nancy Bryson Byers...the cabin has been reassempled at the Heritage Center located on School St. in Blairsville, GA.  Nick purchased the cabin and 90 acres of farm and woodland from Will Chapman in 1923.  Price, $500.00 and Will reserved th right to cut his firewood from one end of the property.  Nick an family lived in the cabin until their house was built.  Nick was killed in a farming accident in 1955 jus one month shy of 80 years of age.  The heirs sold the propert to Hoke and Charlene Gray Sullivan in 1956.  The Sullivans donated the cabin to the Union County Historical Society in 2008.
 
This writer's maternal family, the Mauneys, held their annual family reunion here in Blairsville.  This writer was out of town and most of the folks who attended were from north Florida and south Ga....next year we hope to promote it more here in Union County.....
 
This writer's cousin, well-known Square Dance Caller, Ray Mauney, donated a corn sheller to the Union County Heritage Center.  The corn sheller had belonged to our Gndfather, educater-farmer-politician C. S. Mauney.
 
This writer placed a small stone at the grave of Sylvanus Mauney(Antioch Cemetery) with his CSA unit inscribed.  He was married to the former Louisa Hill and they are grtgndparents of this writer.
