Tracy Leigh Hodge Biddy, age 24, died Saturday. Ms. Biddy was born in Albany and was a long time resident of Cobb County. She was employed by Rainbow Transport. Survivors include a daughter, Crystal Lauren Biddy, Rome; a son, Michael Brandon Hodge, Rome; a sister, Edna Hilderbrand, Hiram; a brother, Kevin Barnett, Dallas; a nice. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home Chapel, Marietta with the Rev. Roger Davis officiating. Interment will be at Kennesaw Memorial Park, Marietta. Annie Laura Mae Smith Dill, age 98, of Ocala, FL. formerly of Cedartown, passed away Sunday, February 12, 1995 after an extended illness. Mrs. Annie Smith Dill was born July 20, 1896 in Bluffton, AL. She was a retired homemaker and a former merchant in Cedartown. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church. Mrs. Dill was preceded in death by her husband, Littleton Owens Dill and 2 sons Cecil Owens Dill and Dewey Seals Dill. Survivors include: 2 daughters, Evelyn Headrick Wynne of Rome, GA. and Mary Engleman of Ocala, FL; sister, Bonnie Hudgins Wallace of Breman; 17 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, February 15, 1995 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Brooks and Rev. Dale Fincher officiating. Interment will follow in the Etna Cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening from 7 until 9 PM. At other hours the family will be at Mary Ann Dill Womack's residence in Silver Creek. Pallbearers will be: Benny Dill, Jr., Mario Reyes, Michael Gonzales, Keith Dill, James Calvin Headrick, Charles Smith, Gerald Headrick, Jimmy Ivey and Jeff Headrick. Gammage Funeral Home of Cedartown is in charge of arrangements.


Mrs. Mary L. Ferguson, 62, of 141 Deer Trail, Rockmart, died Saturday (February 15, 1992) morning at Polk Medical Center after a short illness. Mrs. Ferguson was born in Polk County, May 3, 1929, daughter of the late Elizabeth Smith Snedden and the late James E. Little. She was a homemaker and a member of the Flint Hill Baptist Church. Survivors include: her husband, E. C. Ferguson, to whom she was married on Oct. 2, 1948; a brother, C. W. Little, Lindale; three sisters, Ms. Virginia Little, Rome, Mrs. Sarah Howard, Silver Creek, and Mrs. Hazel Miller, Alamogordo, New Mexico; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Flint Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Spears officiating. Interment will be at 4 p.m. (EST) at Valhalla Cemetery, Bessemer, Ala.


Mr. Alex Havard, age 19, formerly of Cedartown, passed away August 1 in Singapore following a boating accident. Mr. Havard is survived by his father, Peter Havard of Singapore; his mother, Mrs. Hazel Havard of Hurst Texas; and his brother, Perry Havard of Hurst, Texas. Memorial services were held in Hurst Texas. Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home of Cedartown announced this information.


Mrs. Opal H. Knight, age 70, of Rockmart, died Tuesday, December 25. Mrs. Knight was born November 9, 1920, in Polk County. She was a member of the Morning View Baptist Church. Mrs. Knight is preceded in death by her husband Jim Knight. Surviving are one niece, Mrs. Regina Medlock, Rockmart; one sister, Mrs. Dovie Knight, Rockmart. She was the great aunt of Scottie Graham, Richie Graham, Tim Carter, all of Rockmart; Chris Medlock, South Carolina; and Sherry Cafer, South Carolina. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 27, at 2 p.m. in the Morning View Baptist Church with the Rev. Lawrence Garrett and the Rev. Charles Garrett officiating. Interment followed in the Aragon Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Billy Medlock, Richie Graham, Scottie Graham, Tim Carter, Larry Hindmon and John Paulk. Herbert Wilson "Shorty" Lewis, of 1822 Piedmont Highway, Cedartown, passed away Sunday, October 10, 1993, after an extended illness. Mr. Lewis was born March 3, 1923, in Dawson County. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter William Lewis, and brother, Hulid Don Lewis. Surviving are: wife, Mrs. Dixie Lewis of Cedartown; three daughters, Patricia Pruitt of Cedartown, Kathy McPherson of Bremen, and Carol Kelley of Cedartown; four sons, Herbert Lewis, Jr. of Leesburg, Ala., Clyde Lewis, Terry Lewis, and Ricky Ray Lewis, all of Cedartown; mother, Mrs. Minnie Lewis of Cedartown; five sisters, Eloise Smith, Marie Gravett, and Sara Sanders, all of Cedartown, Beatrice Egnot of Fort Worth, Texas, Betty Ruth Boyd of Canton; four brothers, Gene Lewis of Rome, Clinton Lewis of Mableton, Hubert Lewis of Buchanan, and Buford Lewis of Cedartown; 21 grandchildren; four great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 4 p.m., in the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charles Garner officiating. Interment followed in Polk Memory Gardens. Pallbearers were: Ronnie Long, Mike Beck, Kenny Casey, Roy Trammell, Tommy Hunt, and Tony Gravett. The Gammage Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements. Perry Daniel McInvale, age 92, 148 Cason Road, Cedartown died Saturday, Feb. 15, 1992. Mr. McInvale was born Feb. 1, 1900 in St. Clair County, Ala. The son of the late John W. and Nancy Jane McInvale, Mr. McInvale was a member of the Church of Christ and a retired employee of the Bibb Manufacturing Company, Columbus. Survivors are one son, Billy McInvale, Warner Robbins, a number of nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside services were held Sunday, Feb. 16, at 3 p.m. in the Greenwood Cemetery with Minister Richard Gibbs officiating. Serving, as pallbearers were Ronald Daugherty, Jimmy Carney, Dub McCoy, Bill Lundy, Jr., James Holland and Jimmy Holland. The Alvis Miller and Son Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.


Mrs. Alice Woods Langley, Age 86, 5248 Goldmar Drive, Birmingham, Ala., died Tuesday, July 21, 1992. Mrs. Langley was born March 22, 1906, in Cherokee County, Ala.. She was a member of the Mountain Home Baptist Church. Surviving are four sons, Robert L. Langley, Huntsville, Ala.; Mackey T. Langley, Rome; Doyle T. Langley, Rockmart; Grady R. Langley, Charleston, S.C.; one daughter, Ruby Mitchell, Birmingham; one sister, Angie Langston, Jacksonville, Ala.. Twenty-three grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandaughter also survive. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 23, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of the Freeman Harris Funeral Home with the Rev. Willard Dawson officiating. Interment followed in the Aragon Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Junior Woods, Harvey Woods, Andy LeCroy, Randy LeCroy, Ben Mitchell and Jesse Satcher. The Freeman Harris Funeral Home of Rockmart had charge of arrangements.


Mrs. Viola S. McElwee, 81, of 2016 North Broad St., died Friday. Mrs. McElwee was born in Cherokee County, Ala., daughter of the late Robert Smith and Belle Smith. Survivors include: a daughter Mary Frances McElwee Short, Yuma Ariz.; two sons, Bobby G. McElwee, Cave Spring and Joe McElwee, Rome; a sister, Frances Farmer, Cedartown; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gammage Funeral Home Chapel, Cedartown, with the Rev. Clifford Chandler officiating. Interment will be at Jackson Chapel Cemetery.(Rome News Tribune, Sunday, December 8, 1996)


Howard Osgood McMillan, Jr., of Stone Mountain, died October 4, 1994. He was born in Minneapolis, MN on March 4, 1919. He was a graduate of Clemson University, a commissioned Officer in the U. S. Army and served in Europe with the 20th Army Division and the Third Army in the Korean Conflict. Mr. McMillan was very active in the DeKalb Community. He was a member of the Decatur Kiwanis Club, served as Executive Vice President Realty Contractor, Inc. of Atlanta and was a certified surveyor and farmer. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dolores McMillan; 4 children; Howard O. McMillan, Lawrenceville, GA. James H. McMillan, Asheville, N.C. and Dana M. Peterson, Fuquay-Varina, NC; sister, Patricia Ann Trumble, Milwaukee, WI; 4 grandchildren. Memorial services were held Friday, October 7 at 11:00 AM at St. Nicholas Angelican Church in Stone Mountain with Father Peter Brewer officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local American Heart Association. Wages and Songs Funeral Home, Stone Mountain, GA. Had charge of the arrangements.


Miss Ruth Robinson, age 65 of Milledgeville, formerly of Rockmart, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 1994 in Milledgeville, GA. Miss Robinson was born April; 5, 1929 in Polk County and was a member of Morning View Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mose and Mamie Womack Robinson; sister, Cora Lee Robinson and two brothers, Milton Robinson and Starling Robinson. Surviving are: three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Baggett of Rockmart, Mrs. Julia White of Douglasville, Mrs. Lois Weeks of Rome and a number of nieces and nephews also survived. Funeral services were held Friday, October 7, 1994 at 2 p.m. from the Freeman Harris Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lawrence Garrett officiating. Interment followed in Hills Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Johnny Garrett, D. W. Garrett, Albert Garrett, Ralph Akins, Wendell Terry and Horace Campbell. Freeman Harris Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.


Earnest "Ernie" Eugene Sanders, age 68, 554 Sacramento Street, Ft. Myers, Florida died Monday, February 17, 1992. Mr. Sanders was born December 13, 1923 in Polk County. Survivors are his wife, Patricia A. Sanders, North Ft. Myers, Florida; two daughters, Linda Gomersall, Kingston, Mass.; Barbara Skinner, Ft. Myers, Florida; one son Earnest D. Sanders, Ft. Myers; two sisters Sara Patterson, Atlanta, Stella Brewer, Kinston, N.C.; one brother, Doug Sanders, Houston, Texas; four grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 19, 1992 in the Chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with the Rev. Grady Kines officiating. Interment followed in the Northview Cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites conducted by the Caledonia Lodge No. 121 Cedartown. Gammage Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.


Charles Smith, age 71, of 222 Atlanta Street, passed away Saturday, December 30, 1995 following an extended illness. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Bessie Mae Ferguson Smith. Surviving are: wife, Eloise Smith of Cedartown; two daughters, Dean Arencibia of Cedartown and Charlene Kuhlman of Rome; two sons, Ralph Walter Smith, Sr. and Billy Ray Smith each of Cedartown; two sisters, Dixie Lewis and Edna Waters, both of Cedartown; brother, Buddy Eugene Smith of Marietta; twelve grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 2, 1996 at 2 p.m., in the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charles Garner and the Rev. Monroe Willingham officiating. Interment followed in Northview Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Freddy Arencibia, Jr., Ralph Smith, Jr., Bill Kuhlman, Joey Cochran, Jason Cox, and Randy Prewett. Honorary escorts were C. R. Martin, Hershel Wright, Pud Willingham, Bud Stroup, Wallace Pitts, and Doug Landrum. The Gammage Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements. Howard Thurrel (Pete) Smith, age 67, of Forest Park, died Sunday, December 23. Mr. Smith was born November 28, 1923. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and a retired photographer. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Ora H. Smith, Cedartown; one brother, Don Smith, Woodstock. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 26, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Howard officiating. Interment followed in Northview Cemetery. Serving, as pallbearers were Jerry Knowles, Ed Griffin, Doug Runyon, Butch Pierce, Ralph Baker, Harold Morgan, John Teat, Joe Camarata and Jimmy Vincent. Mrs. Maggie Frances Prophett Smith, age 80, 607 Edwards Rd. Cedartown, died Saturday, February 15, 1992. Mrs. Smith was born October 9, 1911, in Troup County and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband Mr. Calep Henry Smith, and a daughter Mrs. Sherry Jean Pruitt. Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Davis and Mrs. Beth Allen, both of Cedartown; three sons, James Smith, Phillip Smith and Albert Smith, all of Cedartown; ten grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held Monday, February 17, in the Chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with the Rev. Russell Jolly officiating. Interment followed in Shiloh Baptist Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Doug Wood, Jerry Palmer, Ricky Roberson, Earl Smith, J.C. Smith and William Blankenship. Gammage Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.


William Everett Smith, age 85, of Route 1, Piedmont, passed away Wednesday at his residence. Mr. Smith was a native and resident of Cherokee County most of his life. He was a retired Boiler Maker with local 454 of Chattanooga, Tenn. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church. Surviving are; wife, Alma Smith of Tecumseh; two daughters, Alice Carter of Cedartown and Carolyn Johnson of Tecumseh; five sons, Robert Ray Smith of Hughwood, Oregon, Paul White of Tecumseh, Charles Smith and David Smith both of Cedartown and Danny Smith of Rock Run; two sisters, Annie Dill of Florida and Bonnie Wallace of Villa Rica, 16 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survived. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. Alabama time and 3 p.m. Georgia time at Salem Baptist Church with Rev. Marshall Morgan officiating. Interment followed in the adjoining cemetery. Pallbearers were; Ted Smith, Hubert Haney, William Bowman, Matthew Smith, Jeromy Johnson, Charles "Preacher" Smith, Gary Smith, J.W. Smith, John Carter and Chad Johnson. Mrs. Ruth M. Spann, 69, of 1680 Johnson Lake Road, died Monday, February 17, 1992. Mrs. Spann was born February 24, 1922 in Union, Pennsylvania, and was a Registered Nurse employed with the Polk County Nursing Home. Survivors are her husband J.E. Spann, Sr., Cedartown; one son Darrell Scott Spann, Hapeville; three step-daughters, Gayle Twilley, Hiram; Janice S. Rose, Terre Haute, Indiana; Nancy J. Hagan, Hiram; one step-son, J. E. Spann, Jr., Cedartown, one sister, Mrs. Rhoda Ritchey, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were scheduled to be held today (February 20) in the Chapel of Gammage Funeral Home with the Rev. James W. Mack officiating. Interment will follow in Polk Memory Gardens. Serving as pallbearers were: David W. Spann, Russell Spann, Myron Spann, Brian Spann, Robert L. Spann, Gene Trulove. Gammage Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.


Edna Ruth Waters, age 67, of Lafayette, passed away Saturday, September 14, 1996 following an extended illness. Mrs. Waters was born June 6, 1929 in Cherokee County, Alabama. She was a retired textile weaver. She was preceded in death by: parents, Charlie Boyd and Bessie Mae Smith; son, Daniel R. Winkles; stepson, Donald Waters; sister, Betty Mitchell; and brother, Charles W. Smith. Survivors include: husband, J. R. Waters of Lafayette; daughter, Brenda Peek of St. Augustine, Florida; stepdaughter Betty Pyles of Cedartown; sister Dixie Lewis of Cedartown; Buddy E. Smith of Marietta; three grandchildren and six step grandchildren; four great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, September 16, at 4 p.m. from the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with the Rev. Chuck Garner officiating. Interment followed in Polk Memory Gardens. Robert Lee (Bob) Whitehead, 117 John Phillips Road, Cedartown, died Sunday, December 23. Mr. Whitehead was born April 24, 1904 in Polk County. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church and a retired brick mason. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Louise Whitehead, Cedartown; two daughters, Mrs. Catherine Massey, Newnan; Mrs. Lavonia Kellett, Rockmart; one sister, Mrs. Lucille Holland, Baltimore, Maryland; one brother, Waller Whitehead, Cedartown. Five granddaughters and five grandsons also survive. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 26, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Miller officiating. Interment followed in the Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial contributions be made to the Second Baptist Church. Mrs. Ruby Franklin Young, Graveside services for Mrs. Ruby Franklin Young were at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sulphur Springs Cemetery. Mrs. Young 84, of Valley Head, Ala., formerly of Rome died Thursday. She was born in Walker County. She was a longtime resident of Rome, of the Christian faith and was preceded in death by her husband, Jasper Thomas Young. Survivors include a son, Bobby Gene Young, Rome: two daughters, Laquinta Brown, Rome and Juanita Oliver, Valley Head; 14 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; 16 great great grandchildren.
