Mrs. Georgiann Roxie Berryhill, 78, of Rossville, died Thursday, (May 28, 1970) at her residence. Mrs. Berryhill, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Cicero Isom Ray, was born in Calhoun, April 26, 1892, and had resided in Rome for 50 years. She moved to Rossville in 1969 to live with her grandson. She was a member of the Bluffton, Ala. Baptist Church and for thirty years owned and operated a grocery store and cafe in the North and West Rome area. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Sanders Berryhill, on October 4, 1942. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. H. H. Holder, Atlanta, and Mrs. Nettie Beal, South Carolina; one half sister, Mrs. Rosa Lee Phillips, Miami, Fla.; one grandson, Arthur T. Guice, Jr., Rossville; and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Jennings Funeral Home with Parnick Jennings Sr. officiating. Interment will be in the East View Cemetery. The body will remain at the Jennings Funeral Home where the family will receive friends today from 7-9 p.m.. Jennings Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.


Mr Stephen Andrew Bowen, 88, of 621 West Avenue, passed away Saturday after an extended illness. Mr Bowen was born Feb. 1, 1879 in Clay County, Alabama, but had lived most of his life in Polk County, Georgia. He was a member of the Wimberly Hill Baptist Church and was preceeded in death by his wife, the former, Miss Lula Irwin. Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm Monday from the Chapel of the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home with the Rev. Murel Hudson and the Rev. W. R. Simmone officiating. Internment follwoed in the Lime Branch Cemetery. Surviving are: two sons, Jack Bowen of Cedartown and Lewis Bowen of Rome; five daughters, Mrs, Travis Hicks of Smyrna, Mrs. Ophelia Haney of Rome, Mrs. Pauline Mobley, Mrs. Raymond Hulsey and Mrs. Cecil Guice all of Cedartown, Georgia; three sisters, Mrs. Joe Hulsey, Mrs. Lizzie Hitchcock, both of Piedmont, Alabama, and Mrs. Lloyd Stephens of Cedartown, Georgia; 23 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild also survive. Pallbearers were; William Mobley, Billy Haney, T. W. Overby, Wayne Williams, Harold Wiggins and Cecil Guice. Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Mrs. Lottie Viola Dawson, Mrs. Lottie Viola Goss Dawson, age 66, of Piedmont, Rt. 2, died Wednesday at 11:50 p.m. at an Anniston hospital. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Hall,s Chapel Congregational Holiness Church with the Revs. Barney Ford, Sanford Willis, Duffie Morgan and Archie Gardner officiating. Burial will be in Plum Springs Cemetery in Eastaboga, Mickelsen,s Brown-Service Mortuary in charge. The body will lie in state at the residence until time of services. She is survived by her husband, S. C. Dawson; four daughters, Mrs. Gladys Lockridge of Blue Mountain, Mrs. Zonie Matthews of Rome, GA., Mrs. Mae Superneau of Huntsville and Mrs.Virginia Kirby of Jefferson, GA.; two sons, Walter Dawson of Crestview, Fla.; and Willard Dawson of Weaver; 15 grandchildren and five great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Alma Owens of Blue Mountain and Mrs. Melba Turner of Eastaboga, and four brothers, Norman Langley of Aragon, GA., Ellis Goss of Cedar Bluff, Ira Goss of Anniston and Harvey Goss of Anniston. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Mrs. Dawson formerly lived in Cherokee County and had lived in Calhoun County the past 20 years. (Anniston Star, November 17, 1966)


Mary Ann Frew, Funeral services for Miss Mary Ann Frew, 14 month old daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Sam Frew, of 301 West Queen St. Cedartown, who died Monday at her residence after an extended illness were held at 3 p.m., Tuesday in the Chapel of the First Baptist Church. Dr. Hugh L. Smith and the Rev. Tom Rogers conducted the services, Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery. She was born on March 25, 1960 in Cedartown and had lived her entire life here. Survivors are her parents; two brothers, Vance Frew, Charles Frew, both of Cedartown; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Charles Vance, Sr. of Cedartown; paternal grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. W. L. Frew of Oklahoma City, Okla., Pallbearers were Joe Vance, Charles Vance, Thornton Vance, Bob Darden. Olin Gammage was in charge of the funeral arrangements.


Mrs. Irene Hulsey, funeral services for Mrs. Irene Mae Hulsey, 70, of 424 Maple St., Rockmart, who died Wednesday in the Rockmart-Aragon Hospital are scheduled at 2 p.m. today in the Fairview Baptist Church. The Rev. Larry Davis and the Rev. E. S. Head will conduct the services. Burial will follow in the Taylorsville Cemetery. She was borne in Bartow County and lived in Rockmart her entire life. Survivors are one son, Walter Rowe Hulsey of Rockmart; three daughters, Mrs. Tom Brock of Aragon, Mrs. Eugene Belle of Rockmart and Mrs. John F. Austin of Juno, Ga.; three brothers, Bob Haney of Mason Lake, Wash., Otis Haney and J. W. Haney both of Rockmart; three sisters, Mrs. Pearl Haney and Miss Alma Haney both of Rockmart and Mrs. Luther Brumbelow of Carrollton, Ga.; 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. James Everett Little, Funeral services for James Everett Little, 80, of 1909 Hull St., who died Saturday (November 28, 1970) at 1 p.m. in a Rome hospital following a sudden illness, will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Henderson Frazier chapel with the Rev. Harvey Brown officiating. Interment will be in Floyd Memory Gardens. Mr. Little was born in Polk County Sept. 7, 1890, son of the late Ben and Mary Ann Little. He was a retired employee of the Battey State Hospital, and a member of Etna Baptist Church. Survivors include one son, Clifford Little of Lindale; four daughters, Miss Virginia Little of Lindale, Mrs. Sarah Howard of Silver Creek, Mrs. Mary Ferguson of Hampton, Va., and Mrs. Hazel Miller of Highrose, N.M.; one sister, Mrs. Allie Dempsey of Cedartown; six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers include Clifford Little, M. C. Dempsey, Herman Poe, Granger Poe, Jim Sanders, and Freddie Slaughter. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 P.M.


Buddy Bruce Myers, 26, of Primrose Road, Rome Rte. 3, died Thursday in an on the job accident near the Antioch community in Polk County when an earth moving machine he was operating overturned. Mr. Myers was born in Floyd County, August 3, 1943, son of Mrs. Willie Mae Gilham Myers and the late Harvey William Myers. He had spent his entire life in Rome and Floyd County and at the time of his death was employed by the J. W. Wills Construction Company of Cedartown. He was preceded in death by his father on March 1, 1960 and by a brother, Billy Eugene Myers, on Sept 16, 1966. Survivors in addition to his mother include three sisters, Mrs. Barbara Sue Burt and Miss Bernice Myers, both of Rome Rte. 3 and Mrs. Shirley Bolinger, Cedartown; two brothers, Bobby Myers, Cedartown and Carey Myers, Rome Rte. 3; grandmother, Mrs. Ethel Spears, Rome, Rte. 3. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Jackson Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Tommy Rampley and Rev. Jesse McCain officiating. Interment will be in Jackson Chapel Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the residence from 3 p.m. today until the funeral hour. Pallbearers include Clifton Gilham, Travis, Lamar, Jesse, Jimmy and Olive Ashley. Johnnie Slaughter, age 59, died Wednesday morning at his residence in Sidhart, Ala. Funeral services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Alabama time, Friday in the Salem Baptist Church. The Rev. Marshall Morgan and the Rev. Bruce Carson will conduct the services. Burial will follow in the Salem Cemetery. He was born on May 2, 1902 in Spring Garden, Ala. and had lived in Cherokee County all of his life. He was a member of the Salem Baptist Church and a retired ore mine worker. Survivors are his wife, the former Miss Katie Almeda Reid; seven daughters, Mrs. L. D. Erwin of Anniston, Ala., Mrs. Herman Davis of Cedartown, Mrs. Joy Humphrey of Albertsville, Ala., Mrs. J. W. Coley of Decatur, Ga., Mrs.. Jerry Johnson of Piedmont, Ala., Mrs. Archie Toll of Atlanta and Miss Elizabeth Slaughter of Sidhart, Ala.; three sons, Franklin Slaughter of Alabama, Thomas Slaughter of Atlanta and Ray Slaughter of Sidhart, Ala.; two brothers Willie Slaughter of Cedartown and Luther Slaughter of Rockmart; three sisters, Mrs. Julia Gossett of Piedmont, Ala., Mrs. Effie Leak and Mrs. Lucy Knight both of Chattanooga; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren Pallbearers will be Hubert Jones, Ed Williams, Malcolm Mitchell, Paul White, Billy Slaughter and John Robertson. The Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Mr. Willie Frederick Slaughter, age 70, of 303 Edna St. passed away Thursday, March 22, 1979, after a sudden illness. He was born Dec. 06, 1909 in Etowah County Al.. but lived in Cedartown most of his life. He was a member of the Southside Baptist Church and was retired. Survivors include: his wife, Alice Young Slaughter, Rt. 1, Cedartown; two sisters Mrs. Julie Gossett, Piedmont, Ala., Mrs. Effie Leak-Atlanta; three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. from the Southside Baptist Church with the Rev. Guy Smith and the Rev. Tubby Hogan officiating, Interment was in Northview Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Mr. Ed Jackson, Mr. Roland Jackson, Mr. John McElwee, Mr. Virgil Bentley, Mr. Hayward Chandler, Mr. Wesley Hudgins. Gammage Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.


Oscar Andrew Smith, age 85, of Rockmart, Rte. 2, a retired farmer and native of Floyd County, died in a Rockmart convalescent home Saturday morning. He was born in Floyd County, Nov. 22, 1876, son of the late George and Rebekah Drummond Smith, pioneer settlers. Surviving are four sons, J. D. and R. A. Smith, both of Lindale; Charles Smith, Cedartown; Hugh Smith, LaGrange; four daughters, Mrs. Roe Williams, Rockmart; Mrs. Grady Hale, Marietta; Mrs. J. W. Carpenter, Aragon, and Mrs. Paul Walter, and a sister, Mrs. Jennie Grady, Florida. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at by the Freeman Harris Funeral Home of Rockmart.(Rome News Tribune, Sunday, October 28, 1962)


Thomas Clifford Smith, 74, 1411 A. Maple St., died Sunday night in a Rome hospital. He had been in declining health for five years, his condition becoming serious seven weeks age. He was born in Alabama, Sept. 18, 1988, son of Earl and Elizabeth Blackmon Smith. He had lived in Floyd and Bartow Counties for 35 years and was a retired Pepperell Mfg. Co. employee and was a member of the East Rome Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, the former Alice M. Smith, to whom he was married in 1913; three sons, John Henry Smith of Rome, Rte. 3, William Smith of Rockmart and Hubert Smith of Rome; two daughters, Mrs. Pauline Abernathy of Lindale, Rte. 1., Mrs. Mary Dempsey of Cave Spring St.; 25 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the East Rome Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Boatner and the Rev. Larry Davis officiating. Interment will be in Floyd Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Earnest Dunagon, Robert Smith, David Fuller, Gene Wood, Junior Huckaby and Winfred Stegall. The body will lie in state at the residence of a son, John Henry Smith, Rome, Rte. 3, until time for funeral services. Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Snedden, Funeral for Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Snedden, 69, of 619 13th St, S.W. who died Saturday (October 27. 1962) at Brighton, will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at True Methodist Church, East Brighton, with burial in Valhalla, Angwin directing. Mrs. Snedden, a native of Bluffton, lived in West End for 20 years. Surviving include her husband, C. R. Snedden: five daughters, Mrs. James L. Howard, Arizona, Mrs. E. C. Ferguson, California, Mrs. Lamar Spears, Rome, GA., Miss Virginia Little, Rome, GA.; one son, Clifford Little; two brothers, W. E. Smith, Bluffton; James O. Smith, Gadsden; five sisters, Mrs. C. Green, Mrs. J. J. Hanley, Cedartown, GA., Mrs. Frances Mann, Brighton, Mrs. Annie Dill, Esom Hill Ga., Mrs. Bonnie Wallace, Rockmart, GA.


Mrs. Elizabeth Snedden, of Birmingham, Ala., mother of area residents, passed away Saturday (October 27, 1962) at the home of a sister in Brighton, Ala. Surviving are her husband; one son, Clifford W. Little, of Lindale, Rte. 1; five daughters, Mrs. Charlie Spears and Miss Virginia Little both of Hollywood; Mrs. Mary Furgeson, of California; Mrs. Hazel Miller, of Mexico, and Mrs. Sara Howard, of Arizona; and other relatives. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock (Alabama time) Thursday afternoon in Brown's Funeral Home, in Ensley, Ala. Burial will be in Brighton, Ala. in the Valla Halla cemetery. Brown's Funeral Home, of Ensley, is in charge of arrangements. (she was born February 18, 1892) (Rome News Tribune October 30, 1962)


Mrs. C. H. Ward, 95, of Rush Chapel Road, Adairsville Route 1, died today in a Rome nursing home following an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Ward was born in Floyd County, May 31, 1874, daughter of the late Berry G. Camp and Mary E. Lewis Camp and had spent her entire life here. She was a member of Rush Chapel United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Horace Ward, September 3, 1962. Survivors include two sons, William Ward, Atlanta, and Col. Albert Ward, Langley Air Force Base, Va.; one daughter, Mrs. J. J. Entrekin, Atlanta; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete but will be announced later by Jennings Funeral Home. Contributions may be made to the Rush Chapel United Methodist Church Building Fund.
