Georgia Ghost Towns

My name is Judy White and I am the new host of this web site. It will take me a while to find my way around these pages and add new information, just keep checking back!!  Doris has done such a great job of getting them set up!!

Are you a member of the GA-GHOSTTOWNS Mailing List? It is a mailing list for anyone with a genealogical or historical interest in the ghost towns of Georgia. To subscribe send "subscribe" to [email protected] (mail mode) or [email protected] (digest mode).

What is meant by "Ghost Town"? Your first thought would probably be that deserted old western town with dust and sagebrush blowing through town. A shutter flapping in the wind and no one around. But it could be that group of old buildings down the road. You know, the ones that are overgrown with weeds, brush and trees. And just out from them that old house or church that has long ago seen it last visitor. This too could be a "Ghost Town." It can be a town or community that was a thriving commercial center or largely populated, but has either been abandoned or diminished greatly from what it once was during it's "Boom Days". Let's look at the classes of "Ghost Towns".

There are six classes of "Ghost Towns", but we are mainly concerned with the first four.

bullet

Scattered rubble or site where nature has reclaimed the land.

bullet

Roofless buildings or partially demolished buildings.

bullet

Boarded up or abandoned buildings, no population.

bullet

A community with many abandoned buildings and a small population of residents.

bullet

Historic community or town, functional, but much smaller than in its boom years.

bullet

A restored town, state park, or replica of an old town, community or fort.
Modified from Gary Speck's "classes of Ghost Towns".

Before visiting any of the "Ghost Towns", be sure to read the

If you have information about a Georgia "Ghost Town", we would like to hear from you . Will give you credit for any information that you send. Or you may want to adopt an entire county and share information with others. Thanks for your help.
