-Feb- Col.  Benton Latain "Tane" Smith, well-known and respected political leader, dies.  Served in State Senate and General Assembly.

-Aug 9- Col Mike McKinney, 85, died.  Founder of Blue Ridge.

-John F. Thomas, b 1842, d 1925, mar. Mary A. Walls and had 11 children: Dr. W. C., G. O., Mercer, Mrs Delia Price, Mrs Mary Ann Davis, Mrs Emma Thomas, Mrs Ella Davis, Mrs Ola Witzell, Mrs Ida Terrell, Mrs Nora Gilbert, & Mrs Pearl Pool.  Survived by 2nd wife, Sarah (Young) Thomas.

1927 

- Jan – Gus Farmer of Lula killed in car wreck in January

-Sheriff J. K. Bell had a man to visit him for whom he had an outstanding warrant.  After the man thawed out before the sheriff’s fire, the guest was hustled off and locked up by the sheriff.

-Fannin County Bank has assets of $300,000.

-Mary P Willingham freshman class elects Hazel Bearden the prettiest and Opal Tarpley the cutest.

-Jan 23- Former Postmistress during Wilson administration, Mrs. Mary A. Smith, 68, of Mineral Bluff, dies. was sister to Ad Harper.

- Feb - Celia Cochran administratrix of estate of P. C. Cochran.

-Feb 20- Cecil McKinney, eldest son of J. M. McKinney, dies.  Left wife and two sons.

-Mar 3-Col. Thos. A. Brown, 64, dies, left wife & sons, Edgar & Stuart..  He was a lawyer for 30 years, served as senator in state legislature, and was mayor of Blue Ridge for one term.

-Mar 2- Mrs Hepsie M. Wheeler, 74, died.  Survived by children: R. H., Oscar, Arthur, and Mrs Sallie Holden.  Thre children predeceased her.

- John F. Tarpley, county game and fish warden moves to Sugar Creek.

-Mar 10-Adam Davenport, Former Supt. of Schools and Confederate veteran, 83, of Hemptown, dies.  Son of William Davenport of Washington Co., Va. and Margaret Speare Ray of Rhea Co., Tenn.  Grandfather was Rev. War soldier.  Married Mary Ann Ashworth in 1868 and had 11 children.

- Mr. W. M. Barnes of Higdons Store died 28 Feb.

-J. E. Davis advertises all-wool men's suits for $21.75

-Mar 27- Joshua M. Hall, 93, dies.  Left sons: James, John, T. G. and daughters: Mrs John M. Ash, Mrs W. G. Thomas and Mrs Thomas R. Johnson.

-Mrs Martha E. (Wilson) Anderson, 91, dies leaving daughters: [Juliette] Mrs J. E. Cochran and [Jane] Mrs J. E.  Willis.  Was married in 1858 to John M. Douthit who died in Confederate Army in 1863, and in 1879 to Thomas Anderson.

-Confederate veteran James A. Jones, 85, of Murphy Junction, dies leaving sons: Perry & Harvey, daughters: Mrs J. W. Clark, Mrs Mollie Brunkow, Mrs Gus Pierce, Mrs Lon Crisp, Mrs Ogle, Mrs O. T. Olvey, and sisters: Mrs Nellie Hughes & Mrs Tilda Butt.  Moved from Union County 30 years ago.

-Weekly newspaper feature on former residents around Akron and Kent, Ohio.

-Sheriff Bell captures a big Peerless 8 car with 101 gallons liquor.

-William Bolile convicted of murder of nephew.  Given life.

-Spurgin Randolph shot and killed by Reed Hickey at Ben Tilley place.  Murder trial ended in mistrial.

-New Chevrolets selling at $525 for a roadster and $395 for a pickup.

- Crawford reunion:  John W. Crawford , 98, (b 1829) was oldest one present.

-"Uncle Jack" Russel, colored, over 100 years old, living at Blue Ridge.  He knew Rev. Geo. Truitt, and Rev. F. C. McConnell since he was a boy.  

-Aug- Joe Brown Chastain, 38, killed in truck wreck.

- W. Lee Cape, Pickens policeman, killed and decapitated by moonshiners.

-         George N. Green dies 8 Dec.

- Mrs Wright, 90+, dies at home of dau., Nrs James Puckett, of Blue Ridge.

-Jan- Fayette Forrester, 85, Union Soldier in Civil War, dies.  He married a Marshall.  Survived by children: J. E. Forrester and Mrs Alice Newberry.

-April- Mrs Margaret (Morris) Trammell, 86, widow of Tom Trammell, dies.  Children: J. Van Trammell, Mrs Gus Smith, Mrs. B. L. Smith.

-Sept- Tom R. Johnson, 69, dies.  Married daughter of Josh Hall.  Survived by children: Josh, Joe, Charley, Reid, Mrs John Mull, Mrs Arthur Olvey, [Vista] Mrs Arthur Gilliam, and Mrs Harry Mallard.

-Nov 6- W. L[ester] "Red" Parks, 37, dies from poisoned whiskey.  Married [Pearl Mae] daughter of Prof. George W. Tarpley.

-Dec.- Mrs John A. McKinney, now of Ball Ground formerly of Chesnut Gap, dies.

-Dec 30- Rev. E. Web Kincaid , 77, brother of J. R. Kincaid dies at Maryville, TN.

- 8 Feb, Mrs. Elizabeth Carolyn [Orton]. Ralston, 66 [b 26 Jan 1863], of Wilscot, died exactly one year after husband, Robert D. Ralston [d 10 Feb 1928].  Had 12 children of which two died as infants.  Daus: Mrs Nancy Tilley & Mrs Candus Bryan predeceased parents. Survived by children: Martha Ralston, William D. Ralston, Ruth E. McClure, Callie E. Weeks, Mary E. Vanzant, J. Lewis Ralston, Lee W. Ralston, & Joseph P. Ralston.

- 9 Jan – Mrs Golden, mother of J. L. and G. L. Golden dies at Sugar Creek.

- Jan – Joe Foster, who shot and killed John Gilbert at Benton, TN last summer was turned in by bondsman.

-County Commissioner George A. Curtis bought a rock crusher for county.

-Luke Hampton of Copperhill caught 15.75 lb and 18 lb Muskelonge in Lake Toccoa.  Clyde Reese caught a 5 lb musky, and C. C. Davis of Calhoun caught a 10.75 lb musky

-Sept.- Norman Henry shot by Prince Roper in church yarn at Mineral Bluff.  Henry died in October.

-Oct 15- Joseph Marion Beaver, 73, dies.  Mar. first Elizabeth Morris then Nancy Anderson, dau. of John W. Anderson.  Survived by wife, daughters: Mrs T. M. Callen, Mrs H. Phiffer, Mrs H. A. Vanpoer, Miss Louise & Miss Alice, and sons: Reid, Ralph, and Crawford.

-Oct 19- Mart Ross, 82, bro of former Sheriff Art Ross, dies.  Survived by wife and daughters: Miss Florence, Mrs Grant Waters, Mrs G. Marshall Ware, Mrs Ross Ledford, Mrs Paul Mulkey & Mrs Ed Aderhold.

-Mark C. King, Democrat, wins over G. A. Curtis for Commissioner of Roads and Revenue by 210 votes.

-Nov 13- "Aunt Lively" Davenport, 95, dau. of Hosea Thomas and widow of John Davenport, dies.  Survived by sons: William, James, Dillard & Elisha, and daughters: Mrs J. C. Cobb, Mrs Jess Hayes, Mrs T. K. Cook, Mrs George Thompson, Mrs Alcie Forrester & Mrs Nora Thompson.

- Representative R. T. Hampton, of Fannin County was seated in Georgia House even though he is Republican and Democrat Glenn Allen contested the election.

-February- Morganton's new city hall and jail completed.

-Mar 4- Nancy Gray, 87, widow of Sheriff, John Gray, dies.  Survived by brother, Burt Arp, and sisters: Mrs M. C. Brock, Mrs Martha Withrow, Mrs Vira Withrow, and Mrs L. C. Henry.

-Mar 18-Dr. R. H. Robb, 85, retired Methodist minister, dies.  Native of Tyrone Co., Ireland, Served as principal of Ellijay Seminary and Mount Zion or Epworth Seminary in Fannin County.

-Clara Henry (colored), wife of Tom "Sip" Henry, charged with fatal shooting of son, June, bound over to court for Grand Jury action.

-April 17- George W. Hamption celebrates 101st birthday.

-Apr 25- Alice (McDaris) Fox, 66, daughter of Billy and Rachel McDaris, dies.  Survived by husband, Ben, dau, Gertrude Shields, son, Wayne, bros., James, Jeff & Bob, and sisters, Mary Butt and Tennie Brackett.

-Apr 23- Birthday of Hepsey A. McKinney, 95.  She remembered mountaineers trading beeswax, furs, venison, tallow, and dried herbs such as ginseng, lady slipper, golden seal, and may apple with her husband for merchandise.  They wagoned to Atlanta from Chestnut Gap taking three days one way.  After finishing trading, they bought a years

supplies, and deposited any money with John Silvey & Co.  She named a son after Mr. Silvey.  A shoemaker would come to her home each fall and spend about two weeks making footwear for the family.  Once they had six large bears and a cub, the latter trained to eat chestnuts from her hand.  When the Yankees came in 1864, they burned their corn mill and all their belongings.  They refugeed to Tennessee.  Col. McKinney used to own the famous Horse Shoe Bend tract in Tenn.  With J. B. Glover he helped survey and build the old Marietta & North Georgia Railroad.

-Apr 26- Mrs Paul Dickey dies.  Surv. by mother, Mrs Addie Leatherwood, sister, Mrs Ralph Dickey, and brother Luther Leatherwood.

-Apr 29- Perry Craig, 78, dies.  Survived by wife, sons, A. G., A. T., W. G., and E. A., and daughter Girlie Craig.

-May 8-Miles C. Turner, 90, dies.  He was a Union soldier in Civil War.

-May 10- Cal L. Gray, 82, dies.

-June- Joe Vestal, 82 returns from trip to Pacific coast.  He married Rose Mull, and had 12 children.  Lives at Madola.

-June 25-Robert Willis Woody, 91, Civil War veteran, died.  Survived by son, John, and daughters, Mrs Belle Stover and Mrs Amanda Weeks.

-Mattie Mashburn, 80, visits Atlanta. Surprised by street cars.  Saw her first movie.  Thought motorcycles were funny.  Enjoyed Cyclorama.

-Jul 30- Ruth Adeline Stuart, 87, dau. of William Smith and Adeline Holtzclaw Smith, dies.  Surv. by children: Bertha Stuart, Frank Stuart, William Butt, R. L. Butt, C. M. Butt, Mrs J. C. Stanbery, & J. V. Stuart

-Aug 4- Mrs A. S. J. Hall dies.  Survived by daughters: Mrs Maxie Howard and Mrs W. J. Chastain.

-Aug.- Constable Joe Brown of Higdons' Store murdered by shotgun blast from a parked car.  Murderers escaped without being recognized.

-Sept. 6- New County Courthouse dedicated.

-Oct- Ex-Sheriff J. K. Bell, 52, dies as a result of a fight with a number of parties at the Question Mark, a soft drink place on the Copperhill- Blue Ridge highway.  Survived by wife, dau, Mrs M. K. McKinney, Jr., and sons Vestall, and Howard.

-Oct- CCC Camp F-13 move from Higdon Store to Drain, Oregon announced.

-Oct 28- William A. Tarpley, b May 12 1873, dies.  Was son of Linsey G. and Martha Tarpley.

-Nov.,Red Cross campaign opens with quota for Fannin County of $300.

-Nov- Fannin County War Memorial dedicated.  Present were Gov. Rivers, Sen. George, Sen. Russell, Judge Deaver, etc.  Names of Robert P. Richards, and John G. Green were accidentally left off the monument.

-Nov- T. B. Thomas, 60, dies.  Survived by wife, daughters: Mrs Gladys Bailey & Miss Loy, and sons: Glenn & Gilbert, both marines.

-Nov-Rufe R. Crawford, 65, dies.  Left wife, daus: Mrs Iva Pickelsimer, & Mrs Emma Hyatt, and sons: Clem, Guy, Wayne, Arthur, Sylva, & Arvil.

- Forty vacancies for service in the U. S. Marine Corps will be filled from this district.  Term is four years.

-O. A.  Dillingham had an old time corn shucking last Saturday, and fed everyone an awfully good dinner.  He didn't get all his corn shucked due to everyone eating too much to stoop over.  Hassen Turner and Luke Davenport put on an eating contest won by Hassen.

-Taylor & Collett Motor Co.: New Fords for $599 to $904.

-At CCC Co. 3431 in Gunter Ore., Howard Richards caught a salmon with his bare hands, Arnold Walker caught a Canadian Loon.  Earnest Williams got ducked in the Pacific Ocean when a wave rolled the log he stood on.

     1938

-Sketch about Milligan C. Goss, 75.  Born near Flat Top Mountain, married Maryann Elizabeth Waters, has children, Moses (M. E. Preacher), Luther, and Lura.  Served on County Board of Education, & Board of Trustees of the Epworth Seminary.  Was Notary and Justice of the Peace for 12 years.

-Feb- Hemptown Iron Ore Bank sold for back taxes for 1934-1937 not paid by owners, Hughes & Craigmire

-Pvt Gilbert Thomas, son of the late T. B. & Mrs Annis Thomas, saved the life of a 65-yr old man by pulling him from the river in Alexandria, Va.

-300 CCC camps will be closed before June 1 to reduce strength of Corps.

-Apr 7- Boon Crawford, 71, dies.  Survived by wife, sons: Clyle L. & Lake B., sisters: Mrs W. O.  Bray, Mrs W. C. Bolling, Mrs B. T. West & Mrs H. D. Gurley, and brothers.: Dr. C. B., Mark, and E.  C.

-April- A 15-second earth tremor felt.  No damage reported.

-Ed and Harry Barclay found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in death of ex-sheriff J. K. Bell.

-Feb 10- Mrs Philip Ross dies.  Survived by sons: Rev Milt, George, & Philip, daughters: Mrs C. G. Gray, Mrs J. T. Ross, Mrs Bill Cole, and Miss Dolie.

-Mar 20-Betsy Eveline (Oxford) Parson, 105, widow of Martin Parson dies.
