William Matthias Dennis was born 13 January 1794 NC, and died 20 October 1889 near Eatonton, Putnam County GA. He is buried in Harmony Church Cemetery, Putnam County GA. William served as a Private in the Georgia Militia in Capt. John H. Broadnax's Company of Georgia Militia, 23 Aug 1813 to 5 Mar 1814. He received a pension for his service.

He married Nancy Barnhart on 8 February 1816 in Putnam County GA. Nancy was born ca. 1797 in Hancock County GA, daughter of Philip and Rachel (Williams) Barnhart, and died in Putnam County in 1872. They had eight children: Harvey Jackson born ca. 1818, Newton William, Daniel Johnson born ca. 1832, Thomas Ellsbury born ca. 1834, Bethena born ca. 1821, Mary Ann, Nancy born ca. 1831, and Elizabeth born ca. 1836. Their daughter Mary Ann married Richmond Charles Rogers on 21 July 1844 in Putnam County, and died soon after.
