Brigadier General Moody Bedel

Moody Bedel was born May 12, 1764, Salem, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, son of Timothy and Elizabeth Bedel, and died January 13, 1841, Haverhill, New Hampshire.  Gen. Bedel served in the 11th U.S. Infantry, New Hampshire Militia.  He had orders to raise seven companies for the regular army, establishing a recruiting station at Concord NH.  Between May 8 and September 16, 1812 he had enlisted 397 men for the Eleventh United States Infantry, of which Colonel Bedel was an officer. 

Moody married first to Ruth Hutchins on November 27, 1783, Haverhill, Grafton County, New Hampshire.  Ruth was born February 6, 1764, Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts, and died 12 Mar 1807, Haverhill, New Hampshire.  He married second to Mary Hunt on March 1, 1810 Haverhill, Grafton County, New Hampshire.    

Moody Bedel is buried with his second wife Mary in Bath Village Cemetery, Bath, Grafton County, New Hampshire.  The inscription on his tombstone reads: "Gen. Moody Bedel, Born May 12, 1764, Died Jan 19, 1841 AE. 77 Years 8 Mos, A revolutionary soldier."  The inscription on her tombstone reads: "Mary, Wife of Moody Bedel, Died Apr 4, 1867 Ae. 82?"


The issue of Moody and Ruth Bedel were: John (1822-1875) and Timothy Bedel. Their son Timothy married Isabel.
