Your first step is to do some homework. Collect and organize information that you and other family members have relating to the more recent generations of your family. Good sources are oral history, family Bibles, letters, certificates, legal documents, news clippings and photographs.

Try to organize your data as you go along. Ancestor charts, family group charts and other forms useful in organizing genealogical data are available from a local genealogical society or from genealogical publishers.

Taking good notes and keeping records of your sources as you go along will save time and avoid repetition as you continue your research in libraries, archives and county courthouses.

Research Assistance Available: Several GSNB members are available to answer your research questions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am-1 pm in the Titusville Library’s Nancy C. Sieck Memorial Genealogy Area.  The following websites are good starting points for genealogy research:

The Florida State Genealogical Society (FSGS) provides Florida source materials through the publication of books, the quarterly publication, The Florida Genealogist, and the newsletter, Florida Lines. Research services are available to those who are seeking a Florida Pioneer Certificate.

The Central Florida Genealogical Society provides a meetings/ events calendar, contact list, etc. for family history researchers of central Florida (Orange, Seminole, Osceola and surrounding counties).

The East Central Florida Genealogical Societies Co-op ties together the research efforts of 10 local genealogy societies in 9 East Central Florida counties; this site provides a unique on-line data base, listing over 4000 family histories (sorted by surname) available in the public libraries of the Co-op's domain. Also find information about the member societies.

Central Brevard Library and Reference Center in Cocoa Public Library has a large genealogy department. The Titusville Public Library has a genealogy room that is staffed by the society's members on various days of the week.

The U S Gen Web Project is a large database index, with links to all known genealogical databases searchable through the Web. Choose a county within the United States, and submit a query.

Brevard County´s link to the U S Gen Web Project is especially useful for assistance with family history research in Brevard County, Florida.

Cyndi's List directory is very user-friendly and covers just about everything a genealogist with a PC could want. It has received many awards and continual acknowledgment as "Best Genealogy Site on the Web."

The National Genealogical Society site provides links to beginners´ guides, home-study courses and upcoming conferences, along with many other genealogical resources.
