 The Barney's In Salem

The Barney family is of English descent. The founder of the family was Jacob Barney, born in England, came to America in 1634, and became an influential man of affairs. Daniel was representative to the general assembly at Exeter, 1778, and delegate to the convention that framed the constitution of New Hampshire, 1782.

(V) Constant, son of Daniel Barney, was born 1729, died August 4, 1819. He was one of the first settlers of the town of Richmond, New Hampshire, where he was active in town affairs. He was out with the militia during the revolutionary war. He married, December 13, 1753, Hannah Carpenter, born 1732, died March 28, 1814. They left Richmond about 1785 and settled in Vermont. He was vice-president of the Montgomery County Medical Association in 1836, and was a well-informed and skillful physician. He was a member of the Dutch Reformed church, and acted with the Republican party.

He married, April, 1821, Eliza Swain, daughter of Dr. John Howland and Susan (Simmons) Swain. She is a descendant of Richard Swain, whose son John's name is ninth in the list of the nine purchasers of the island of Nantucket, the deed being given in July, 1659, by Thomas Mayhew. Richard Swain, of Nantucket, came in the "Truelove" in 1635, aged thirty-four, and settled at Hampton, Massachusetts; in 1658 he married Jane Godfrey Bunker, widow of George Bunker, of Ipswich. They later settled on Nantucket. John Swain, son of Richard Swain, was one of the nine original purchasers of the island of Nantucket. He was a member of the Society of Friends, and left a record in his house which was known as the oldest house on the island, standing in 1901, though much out of repair. His wife, Mary Weare or Wier, was of the Scotch family of that name. The Swains are still to be found on Nantucket, and at one time they were numerous there. The parents of Eliza Swain came to New York in 1806. Children of Dr. Zadoc and Eliza (Swain) Barney:

The Potters and Churchmen. Salem Village was well established when the first potter, James Kettle
(b.1664/1665) bought land in 1687 on Frost Fish Brook from Jacob Barney. James Kettle married Elizabeth
Hayward, and her brother Jonathan Hayward a potter trained by Kettle, married Mary Flint. According to research
and excavations by Watkins (1968) James Kettle and Jonathan Hayward.s pottery and kiln were on Frost Fish
Brook (head of the Porter River). One or both of these lived at the current 73 Connant St. Between 1687 and 1695
Jonathan and Mary Hayward had transferred their membership to the church in Salem Village. The Nurses were
covenant members of the church in Salem Town, but attended services in Salem Village as it was much closer.
(Glen Mairo, personal communication) It is possible that both the Haywards and the Nurses were members of the
congregation during the witchcraft incident. Rebecca Nurse was accused of witchcraft in 1692 by young Sarah
Holten who lived across the Crane River (Holten St.). Rebecca was 71 years old when she was hung; July 1693.
Her monument is in the Burial Grounds in the ridge of sands which occupies the west end of the current property.

SALEM WITCHCRAFT
With an Account of Salem Village
and
A History of Opinions on
Witchcraft and Kindred Subjects

10th, East of Frost-fish River, including the northerly end of Leach's Hill, and extending across Ipswich Road,—about 250 acres, known as the "Barney Farm;" originally granted to Richard Ingersoll, Jacob Barney, and Pascha Foote.

11th, South of the "Barney Farm,"—about 200 acres; granted to Lawrence, Richard, and John Leach; owned, in 1692, by John Leach.

12th, North of the "Barney Farm," and between grants No. XIII. and XIV.,—about 250 acres, known as "Gott's Corner;" granted to Charles Gott, Jeffry Massey, Thomas Watson, John Pickard, and Jacob Barney, and by them sold to John Porter. (Recently known as the "Burley Farm.")

13th, Eastward of the "Barney Farm,"—40 acres; originally granted to George Harris, and afterwards to Osmond Trask; owned, in 1692, by his son, John Trask.

"At a general Town meeting, held the 7th day of the 5th month, 1644—ordered that two be appointed every Lord's Day, to walk forth in the time of God's worship, to take notice of such as either lye about the meeting house, without attending to the word and ordinances, or that lye at home or in the fields without giving good account thereof, and to take the names of such persons, and to present them to the magistrates, whereby they may be accordingly proceeded against. The names of such as are ordered to this service are for the 1st day, Mr. Stileman and Philip Veren Jr. 2d day, Philip Veren Sr. and Hilliard Veren. 3d day, Mr. Batter and Joshua Veren. 4th day, Mr. Johnson and Mr. Clark. 5th day, Mr. Downing and Robert Molton Sr. 6th day, Robert Molton Jr. and Richard Ingersol. 7th day, John Ingersol and Richard Pettingell. 8th day, William Haynes and Richard Hutchinson. 9th day, John Putnam and John Hathorne. 10th day, Townsend Bishop and Daniel Rea. 11th day, John Porter and Jacob Barney."

.Jacob Barney was an original grantee, and for several years a deputy. His son of[i.141] the same name became a large landholder, and, on the 5th of April, 1692, at the very moment when the witchcraft delusion was at its height, gave two acres conveniently situated for the erection of a schoolhouse. He conveyed it to inhabitants of the neighborhood to be used for that purpose, mentioning them severally by name. I give the list, as it shows who were the principal people thereabouts at the time: "Mr. Israel Porter; Sergeant John Leach; Cornet Nathaniel Howard, Sr.; Corporal Joseph Herrick, Sr.; Benjamin Porter; Joshua Rea, Sr.; Thomas Raymond, Sr.; Edward Bishop, secundus; John Trask, Jr.; John Creesy; Joshua Rea, Jr.; John Rea; John Flint, Sr." Lawrence Leach received a grant of one hundred acres; and others of the same name and family had similar evidence that they were regarded as valuable accessions to the population. William Dodge and Richard Raymond had grants of sixty acres each; Humphrey and William Woodbury had forty each.
